I read all the post in the oil surveys but remain uncertain about the type oil for the primary. I read 69 posts and it seemed like 69 different opinions. What oil do you baggers use in the primary and is it regular motor oil like 10W-40W or is it an ATF type product. Also, I'm fixing to do my first oil change in all three holes so I can justify the expense of my new J&S jack. Is there anything special I should know that is not in the service manual? I plan to use Mobil 1 75/90 or Redline Shockproof in the tranny and Mobil 1 V Twin in the engine. This is on a 08 RG with 9 K, the dealer did the first two changes. Thanks for your help.
You're going to get a lot of different opinions on this, that's why you found so many different answers when you did a search. I use Amsoil 20-50 V-Twin oil in all three holes. 18000 miles, no problems. Changing the oil and filter is a no brainer, but the filter can be messy. Try putting a couple of baggies over the filter, THEN loosen and remove it. Do this with the bike on it's Jiffy stand (side stand) Also, I recommend using the right torque settings when you snug things up. You'll be surprised to see how loose the drain plugs feel, but better than stripping them out.
Yes, you can run HD syn3 in all 3 holes. I've done this for just about 30,000 miles now with no trouble. And as far as 38oz vs 40oz, if the primary lost half of it's oil and you ran it for a few hundred miles, you'd probably never know the difference (neither would the primary).

So what's the consensus? Even though an '07 calls for 38oz, is everyone just putting in a quart/32oz and not worrying about the other 6oz?
Is there a better place than the stealer to get the oil filter wrench?
I would recommend going to a 'local' bike shop and getting the K&N filters that have the 'nut' on the top for easy removal with a rachet.
I'm sure there are other companies that ake them - we just always end-up with the K&N somehow.
In my primary I use the H-D lubricant - mostly out of convenience... I had about 1/2 a case sitting here in the garage. Ijust dump the whole bottle in - never really messed with topping of the extra 6oz.
As far as oil, I use whatever 20/50 I have sitting around.
For the transmission I dump in some ATF and stop when the stick tells me too.
I try to make sure that at least one of the fluids is a different color incase anything decides to start leaking...then it's easier to determine what it is.
