Mobil 1 15-50, 5qt jug for $22 at Walmart.........3.5qts in the motor, 1.?qts in the primary
Mobil 1 75w90, 1qt jug for $7 at Walmart.........for the transmission.
I fill the primary until the fluid hits the bottom of the clutch housing, that's how the service manual tells you to do it......normally takes a bit over 1 qt.
Any local autoparts store will have the oil filter cap socket, normally about $5 and works great with a ratchet and extension.
I read all the post in the oil surveys but remain uncertain about the type oil for the primary. I read 69 posts and it seemed like 69 different opinions. What oil do you baggers use in the primary and is it regular motor oil like 10W-40W or is it an ATF type product. Also, I'm fixing to do my first oil change in all three holes so I can justify the expense of my new J&S jack. Is there anything special I should know that is not in the service manual? I plan to use Mobil 1 75/90 or Redline Shockproof in the tranny and Mobil 1 V Twin in the engine. This is on a 08 RG with 9 K, the dealer did the first two changes. Thanks for your help.
Did you get the oil pan option for your J&S? I did and it's great to be able to drain all 3 holes at once.
I use chrome K&N filters because of the nut on the end which makes it so easy to remove the filter. I also tried the aluminum foil trick to catch the oil coming out of the filter. Caught most of it but still got some running down the frame.
I too read all the posts and ended up with this . . .
Amsoil 20W50 in motor
Amsoil 75W90 in the trans
HD formula + in the primary.
I know, I know . . . THREE DIFFERENT OILS! It's no big deal for me. I just keep a good supply around. Also use the same oils in my Sporty.
Oil choice is a funny thing. It's a personal thing . . . kind of like the beer you drink.
Sometimes we find the end cap wrench wont loosen up the filter and we had a K&N twist the nut right off it, the creeton that changed the oil last thought he was torqueing down a compensator nut not an oil filter. Because of this we use a strap type wrench to remove all the oil filters. If you take some aluminum foil and double it over, then work it up under your filter making a trough you can change your filter without making a mess. Then you just ball it up and throw it away, wipe upwhat littleoil that might have gotten by and you are in business. Don't forget to wipe a little oil on the o-ring on the filter.
I run mobil 1 syn 3or redline vtwin primary oilin the primary but if you can find some redline v twin tranny fluid for the tranny you will notice a big difference. shifts with a click instead of a clunk
