Default Help with NOISE

Would a bad compensator spring cause the following noise.

When at operating temp and under load
Rattle in front of primary
Sounds like it travels to rear cyl top end
Just prior to shifting sounds real loud on leftside

99 EVO
LOTS of work

The link has a blocked segment probably due to the fact it's a link to a competing forum.

Have you opened up the primary to see inside yet? It could be so many things from a bad compensator to a lose primary chain. The clutch hub could have loose bolts, the compensator bolt (nut) could be backing off and unscrewing. You could have a bad clutch hub bearing or the more common Inner Primary Bearing (IPB) is worn. It may even be bearings in the transmission.

Do this, search for IPB in this forum (search button on the above tool bar) and do a bit of studying up and trouble shooting yourself. By reading other's posts that are similar to your issue, you can really educate yourself.

Do you have the service manual. EVERYONE owning a Harley should buy the FACTORY service manual, it specifically identifies your issue and how best to fix it. Trying to fix someone's bike over the internet is nearly impossible.

Default I think I found the problem

Opened up the primary last night and pulled off the compensator.
Since it's the 1st time I’ve pulled one off, my question is should the spring inside the compensator be loose and rattling around with a light jiggle of the compensator. I am thinking not. I can move the spring around with my finger and the spring has more then a 1/4" of in and out movement.

Are you sure you pulled the compensator off? There are 2 ways to take it off, one is to remove the inner primary which is involved & the other is to grind off the inner primary lip from about 5 to 11 o'clock so the compensator slides out. I assume it's the softail in your sig.

Your description sounds like a ping under load. I had to retard the timing on my 09 Heritage Tmax as the map I was using was to advanced. All gone now.
