Default Question for you Electrical Wizards

Prior to 2001, Harley utilized a 32 amp Voltage Regulator and a 30 amp Breaker. In 2001 Harley introduced the 3 phase 38 amp Regulator but retained the 30 amp Breaker. In 2007, a 40 amp Regulator was introduced with the 40 amp Maxi Fuse eliminating the breaker.

My question is, from 2001 through 2006, why was the 30 amp Breaker retained and utilized with the up-graded 38 amp Regulator. The extra amperage seems pointless if bottle-necked through the same 30 amp Breaker used on the EVO 32 amp system.

Nothing is done without reason, I just don't see it.

let me take a stab at it..

the fuse or breaker is designed to protect a given circuit, not regulate the output of the charging system. the fuse size is calculated on the maximum amount of the draw of a given circuit. the fuse is always "oversized" for the normal load in a circuit. say a individual circuit with all its loads, lights, motors etc.. is 12 amp, that circuit would get a 15 amp fuse. if you put a 10 amp fuse in that circuit it would pop every time maximum load ( everything on) was achieved. of course i'm not claiming this to be the exact formula but just a generalization, but normally a 8-15% of load is added to circuit draw for fuse application.

a lot of vehicles today have alt outputs of well over 150 amp, but the main fuse/breaker in the under hood panel is 100 amp. most charging systems never see max output. the actual charge circuit is not part of the protected/fused circuit. it is direct to the battery/supply side of the fuse panel.

Fuses blow quicker than a breaker, and there's no breaker size between 30 and 40. The overcurrent protection is there to protect the Stator as well as the wiring. So 40 on a 40, 38 and under on a 30.
