I've got a 2008 Deluxe and will be purchasing a set of 16" Carlini Gangster Apes. I've tried to get Carlini to give me the measurements for my cables, but they won't give me the measurements. Does anyone know the measurements so I can order cables?
Pics of these apes on a Deluxe would be great to look at as well.
Thanks in advance for any help. Looking into buying Magnum Shielding cables. Any comments on those?
I just installed 14" Carlini Gangsters on my Train. The bars are sick and you will love them. I recommend getting the 1.50 bars and new Carlini risers. The fat bars look so much better than the 1.25's and would really compliment the FL front end on your bike.
I had some serious issues with cables during this install, so I feel your pain. Rule #1: DONT GO OFF OTHER PEOPLES MEASUREMENTS. I did and ended up having to pay a restocking fee when I sent the cables back. Another member used +12 on his clutch and +8 on brake/idle/throttle running 16" bars. Should work for me being that my bars are 2" shorter, right? Wrong.
+12 on everything was my magic number. I have plenty of slack without too much extra flopping around. I went with Magnum Shielding as well, they make a great product and their CS is awesome. Maria Mulero is great, she helped me sort out my issues.
There are so many variables with cable length. When I was doing the measuring for mine and trying to get my + numbers I disconnected everything from the bars and left it attached at the other end. Then, I mounted up my Carlini's. I left plenty of slack and made a nice sweeping motion up to the perches. For some reason I kept coming up with +20 for my clutch and brake line measurements, and I knew that wasn't right. That's when I called MS.
I didn't do a full DIY install thread but I did post up a few "lessons learned" after my install. Hopefully that helps you out. If not, feel free to PM me and I'll do what I can for you.
Thanks for the input. I wanted to have everything ordered at once, hence the reason for my question on cable lenghts instead of simply measuring after they come in and THEN ordering the cables...all while the bike sits idle for a week or two while the cables come in. It's a little frustrating, but looks like I'll just have to measure after the bars come in and play the waiting game. I appreciate the responses and definitely the "+10" advice. That's what was going to be a bit tricky - knowing how much wiggle room to give myself after the straight measurement.
I wish I could help you because we just installed my Gangster apes yesterday but I went with the 14" bars rather than the 16" bars. If this will help I am on my way back down to the shop now and I can measure those for you and I guess then just add 2"'s? Would that work? I would also like to agree with Echo6 Sierra's comment. I would strongly agree with that you want to go with the 1.5" bars as well. I also went with all internals and I will have pictures up tonight, tomorrow morning at the latest. If I would have known it looks this badass with the Gangsters and the all internal wiring and cables I would have done this LONG ago. I know it's a bit "more pricey" but just like the Shotgun Shock, it was worth the wait and every single penny it cost me to do. Let me know if that will help you and I will measure all my cables and get back to you with the measurements on mine.
I highly recommend the Magnum brand. I had their sterling chromite cables installed on my bike and they are really nice. I don't have gangsters, but I have 17" apes. As far as lengths, I couldn't help there. The indy that did my install waited till my bars came in and measured once they were on the bike. He measured them perfectly because there is hardly any slack, just enough to cover the full rotation of the bars. I didn't want a whole bunch of cables sticking out everywhere and he did a great job keeping it super clean looking.
And he told me that the sterling chromite cables won't turn yellowish like all the other stainless steel braided lines out there. They actually have a white color to them that goes well with chrome apes. I know waiting for the cables sucks, but it's worth it to have a clean looking front end. Good luck with your project and post pics when you're done.

You would think it would be that simple but like I said, I ordered my cables based on a member here who was running bars 2" taller than mine thinking I'd have plenty of slack. Not the case. It's best to mount the bars then figure out how you're going to run everything. Just my $0.02
