02 Softail Standard Fuel Injected, Bike Has 28kmiles. I was In the fast lane doing about 85, Bike suddenly started loosing power, sputtering/backfiring, and Lacked Power. I would let up on the throttle, and it would get worse, I would then give more throttle, it would backfire and hesitate. I barely made it home. I am thinking its fuel related issue? I let the bike sit, then I heard the pressurizing of the fuel, the noise it normally made changed, Its not the same noise, now it hisses and makes a different noise. This is why I believe its fuel related. I am going to change the filter and regulator. Any other suggestions? Also anyone know how to remove the endcap, so I can re use it? HD Manual says it must be replaced? to remove the entire pump for inspection. is this the truth? Any Advice greatly appreciated.

if you're pulling it out, you'll want a new gasket for the top and 10 new screws that hold that top piece in as they are designed to lock the threads from allowing fuel to seep out. toss the old ones immediately. I'd also replace the hoses as they go bad when no fuel in the tank and exposed to air and sometimes develop pin holes in them over time. the fuel filter kit from HD will come with the 2 hoses, filter and 2 clamps. The HD standard clamps are a bit diff than normal and will need to be cut off. I used http://www.homedepot.com/p/SharkBite...3081/202032996 style crimpers that I have for plumbing around the house that crimp them properly and may be some cheaper models out there. The petcock tube does not come with the filter kit if you're changing it out as well. http://www.jpcycles.com/product/721-849 is what I used on mine and is the same for your bike but it doesn't come with a clamp, so you'll need to pick up one either from harley or home depot for it as well. Take my word for it, I put mine together without the clamp on it (not paying attention) and blew the hose off while riding down the road.
you should hear the fuel pump kick in as soon as you turn on the ignition. is that the sound that's changing? if so, i'd look at that first. also, before you pull everything out, make sure to drain the tank, and also pull the fuel pump fuse under the seat and run it until it dies to purge everything out of the lines.

I am replacing the Fuel Filter kit and Regulator, When I removed the regulator it looked like the Oring was out of position? and the regulator housing one of the setting tabs or locking tabs has a crack...I am going to repalce the hoses, as well and hope this takes care of it, if not next big replacement is the pump itself! I am hoping a clogged Filter or faulty Regulator are the Culprits of that noise.
I changed the Regulator and Fuel Filter, the Noise it makes when the Pump is turning went back to normal, But now I have a bad leak at the check Valve! soon as its pressurizing it just leaks from the check valve, I disconnect it and re connected it and it wont stop leaking.
