Was going to ride up to Newcomb's Ranch in Angeles Crest early this Saturday.
Had a buddy ready to go. Told him to meet me at my house in fifteen minutes so I can make a gas run.
Get home no problem, wait for the wife to get ready, buddy shows up and I go to fire up my bike, won't start.
It turns over, but seems like the fuel pump is not working. Check the fuses and battery cables, everything ok. I figure it is either the fuel pump or fuel filter.
I've over 41k miles, so I figure it is the fuel filter, never had been changed. So after about $100 in parts I pull the tank apart and install the new filter.
It fires up, but here is something else I found, there was a hole in supply line, a little bigger than a pin hole.
Guess the hose rubbed on the tank. Bike runs better and I ended up riding out to the desert yesterday, bonus was it was so much cooler yesterday and I wasn't pissed anymore.
The service manual on this procedure has a lot to be desired.
Was the hole in the hose that comes with the fuel pump kit?
Yep, would have gotten worse I'm sure. That being said, replacement of the fuel filter is part of the 25k service. Since I do my own servicing, I didn't replace it since I wasn't experiencing any problems. It actually lasted over 40k. It is a pretty crappy design being in the tank.
I had this happen in my 07 Softail Heritage. The convoluted pipe they call it, that runs from the bottom of the tank up to the fuel filter rubbed on the top of the tank and put a pin hole so that when the fuel level dropped below a certain point the fuel pressure dropped. I installed a new filter and a new pipe/conector(to the injectors) and I think the new pipe was a little shorter than the one put in by the factory so it was fixed.
The new hose should be ok. When I installed the new assembly (the quick connect from outside the tank up to the filter.) I compared it to the old one and it was a tad shorter so it didn't touch. The inside of the gas tank was not smooth as you would think so I can see why it rubbed a pin hole. The pin hole happened at about 30K I replaced the filter again at about 53K and all was well. At 54k the bike burned in a fire a total loss. I now have a 2012 and it won't require a filter until 100,000.
