Yup. All the local dealers here in Sac charge about $350 for the 1k service, and $225 just to change fork oil.

Total ripoff.

I want to put the new Bell Ray synth in it, due to the heavier trans fluid, and a K'N filter for convenience. The HD formula is basically 20/50 AMS oil, and they are pretty much trying to stick me with it... and I'm NOT having it!

So, my fine Harley brethren... By not abiding to the "formula" and filter, am I going to Void that warranty???
been a metric cruiser rider for years. always did my own service, even the first service @ 500 miles.
dealer told me it was ok if i did it myself as long as i did it before 1k miles.
i always used yamalube( yamaha's dino oil) and yamaha filters.

when i bought my first harley, 2010 fatboy, everyone i talked to AND the dealer told me my 1k service HAD to be done by dealer or warranty would be voided.
cost me almost $400. i wasn't thrilled and felt that i was getting ripped off.
other than the obvious oil and filter change, i dont really know if they did anything else. fallaway test , tighten all bolts etc etc.
since then, lots of people, including reading it here on forums, have said 1k service is NOT required to be done by dealer.

i'm not saying not to have it done by dealer, but my next new harley will not be brought to dealer for 1k service.

i am a believer in using the mfg's oil and filters, even if i can pay a little less for other brands. So i do all my own service with harley parts.

No it will not void your warranty......

Your dealer is ignorant.... and/or... Lying to get your money... I suggest you find another place to do business....!

You need to have the required service performed. The service can be performed by you or a 3rd party, as long as it's performed according to the guidelines listed in the owner's manual. If you follow the oil recommendations in the owner's manual, you are covered. Make sure to document that all required checks/service were performed by keeping receipts and maintaining a service log (I believe there is a blank service log in the owners manual).

To require you to use only Harley service or only Harley oil is called a "tie-in sales provision". They are generally not allowed in a warranty, per the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

"Tie-In Sales" Provisions
Generally, tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty. The following are examples of prohibited tie-in sales provisions;

In order to keep your new Plenum Brand Vacuum Cleaner warranty in effect, you must use genuine Plenum Brand Filter Bags.

Failure to have scheduled maintenance performed, at your expense, by the Great American Maintenance Company, Inc., voids this warranty."

To have a "tie-in sales provision" in the HD warranty, they would have to, "demonstrate to the satisfaction of the FTC that your product will not work properly without a specified item or service."

HD does not have a "Tie-in Service Provision" on their warranty.

rgr, rgr! So, yeah... the HD formula is 'included' in the $350, they also went over a list of stuff that they claim to do as well.... I figure its 'piece of mind' to have the dealer do the first service , just in case something was to go screwy, then they can't say ****.... I can get the Bell Ray oil at cost so, I was trying to save a few pennies. I also believe that the Bell Ray oil is far superior to the HD formula, however to avoid any future problems I think I may just take it in the *** this time around so that its covered, "just in case"...

Mine blew up at 5k miles. Outa town dealer diagnosed and put in new motor.

My RK has never been to dealer for service. I did the 1k myself with syn 3. I did the 5k my self with mineral after she started knockin.

No questions were asked until tech was getting ready to run the new motor. He called and asked what oil I would like to run syn 3, mineral or Amsoil is in stock anything else would have to order.

Find another dealer.

Good info.
Magnuson-Moss, isn't that the same law that covers "lemon law" claims for motorcycles?

Had the dear do the 1000 mile service on our '06 Sporty and when I got it into the drive way from the ride home, approx. 20 miles, I had a nice puddle of oil on the ground and all over the rear tire and the bottom of the engine. The oil filter had only been finger tightened so it dumped the oil out.

Get the factory service manual and do your own servicing. As stated earlier keep a running log of all the maintenance you do and keep those receipts.
