Actually, you could from a lawyer/court type of case loose here if you had a problem, (oil related like a cam bearing going bad) they refused to honor it, and you took them to court. I doubt it would ever go that far. There is a Federal law that say as long as you keep the receipts for the products, you are allowed to change your own fluids and such. However, they need to be the specification. If you look what Harley calls out, there is a part number and that is all that is on the bottle. Also, the first 1000 is an inspection plus the fluid changes. They should do the inspection free but good luck on that.
the 2 dealers closest to me: one charges $240.00, the other $320.00 for the same service. Local Indy charges $160.00
Same here.
Even though the dealer has their "standard" prices posted in the service department ($350 for 1K, $275 for 5K), both times they charged me significantly less, even using synthetics both times...
SO, the wifey's 2013 Deluxe has hit its first service mark.... Now besides the fact that the HD dealer is sticking it up my *** for the first service ($350)
they are saying that if I chose to use anything OTHER then the HD FORMULA that it could void my warranty?!?!
I want to put the new Bell Ray synth in it, due to the heavier trans fluid, and a K'N filter for convenience. The HD formula is basically 20/50 AMS oil, and they are pretty much trying to stick me with it... and I'm NOT having it!
So, my fine Harley brethren... By not abiding to the "formula" and filter, am I going to Void that warranty???
Thats BS. You can use any approved oil that meets the basic requirements of the manufacturer its no different than your cars or trucks. The Dealers policy may be to not use anything else but that is not Harley Davidsons policy. In the event of a failure they would have to prove it was due to the oil not doing its job.
Just do it yourself and keep receipts or find a honest dealer and supply your fluids and let them do the rest.
Mobile produces HD oil, so your dealer is full of ****.
Like another poster said, if they can determine that your oil or your modifications to your bike is the cause of an issue, that voids the warranty.
Also, $350 is a pretty standard price. My dealer lists the 1k service at $425. Though if you have the service manual and the owners manual, which lists everything they're going to do, you can do it yourself in a few hours.
I would be Happy with those prices. I have to pay alot more here in Germany and I have to bring them my own oil and filter. But I guess at least I get the oil I choose.
my dealer sells and amsoil products besides the moco offerings. i use mobil 1 products and have the dealer install it. that dealer is lying to you...find another dealer.
Our dealer sells Royal Purple, Redline and Belray, Plus the usual HD oils.
In fact several yrs ago they suggested using Bel-ray Hy-Poid in the tranny in my 07 to help quiet the 5th gear (Which my bike was never bad anyway).
So, I tried the Heavier Bel-Ray 80-140 once at 15k,, IMO it was too heavy for our Indiana climate.. dropped it out after 1500 miles.. it just took to long to warn up and shifted really hard for the first 10-15 mins.
Since then I've used Mobile 1 GL (75-90), I like it a LOT better and its Easy to get and Usually every spring its on sale at most auto stores.
Ask the person (aka moron) to write that down for you and sign their name to it so you can discuss it with hd headquarters and the DOT for clarification...Then find a dealer who doesn't lie...or better yet, an indept. hd mechanic.
