If you want the "peace of mind" with this 1K service and don't have the resources to self-maint...bite the bullet. However...don't let the dealer dictate what goes into your motor. FWIW, you can supply all the fluids for this service and direct dealer to use them + deduct the supply cost from their 1K service charge(s).
Also, after this initial service, it gives you time to purchase service manual, get smart on bike maint. and prepare to start "self-wrenching" for the 5K service...JMO.
QC's point is correct. The only way a manufacturer can can 'force you to use their products or void your warranty' is to provide them at no charge. There is an actual court case about this crap. Also, I'd have to agree with other posters who advise finding a new dealership.
SO, the wifey's 2013 Deluxe has hit its first service mark.... Now besides the fact that the HD dealer is sticking it up my *** for the first service ($350)
they are saying that if I chose to use anything OTHER then the HD FORMULA that it could void my warranty?!?!
I want to put the new Bell Ray synth in it, due to the heavier trans fluid, and a K'N filter for convenience. The HD formula is basically 20/50 AMS oil, and they are pretty much trying to stick me with it... and I'm NOT having it!
So, my fine Harley brethren... By not abiding to the "formula" and filter, am I going to Void that warranty???
Is HD oil Amsoil now? I know they do not produce there own oil, but I did not know who was making it now.
Sgt. Jim posted that Mobil is producing H-D's oil, I cannot confirm or deny this. Nor do I have any desire to. Right now I'm running Valvoline full syn 20W50, about $8/qt from Pepboys.
Find another dealer,if your dealer is telling you this crap it will not stand behind you in a warranty claim and I found out from my local dealer that I purchased my road king from, that the dealer that does the warranty claim has a lot to do with harley accepting the claim, most dealers are great about you doing your own service,I have the tools and expertise to do my own service, and I trust no one but myself,I check torque and tightness of every single bolt on the bike when I first purchase it,You would be surprised how many bolts are not tight,On the bike I just bought a year ago one of my rear shock bolts took 2 turns before it was even snug, that gives me the ******* to know that the bike was prepped that poorly,or when you leave the dealer after your 1000 mile service,80 miles later my 2011 road glide faring started rattling and coming loose,Its your life
Just checked the wall at R dealer about a month ago. Most all was services was $275. cept one, think it was the 20k on touring bikes and was $325 or somewhere in that area.????
Last time they serviced mine was in 09, and I had done my oils prior. total bill was $180 or close to it.??
just had my 1000 mile service done. parts $77.80 labor $205(there rate is $82. hour) $4.00 dispose fee = $286.80 using all harley fluids. done at HD dealer in fresno,ca.
Harley-Davidson doesn't publish a oil specification, they are trying to force their oil on people. If H-D thinks the oil is the cause of the damage, H-D will take an oil sample and have it run. If the oil is not in "spec" or "worn" out, they will blame the oil for the damage. But, to date, I have not heard of an engine failure due to oil, in over 30 years.
Formula +, is a good primary and transmission oil.
I just purchased a 2014 Triglide and I specifically asked if I could do the oil changes and not void the warranty. I was told YES, and all I needed to produce was the receipts of having purchased the oil/filters. Type of oil used cannot void the warranty, as long as it meets the minimum requirements as to type. In the case of Amsoil, Amsoil offers there own warranty against failure.
