Brake Pads
I assume by "the inspection" you mean a safety inspection? I've never had anybody check pad thickness as part of that.
I was forced to do a fair bit of riding in the rain early this week and the front brakes sounded and felt really rough when wet, and I'm assuming it's the stock pads installed (bought the bike used)
After searching the forum I gathered that the Lyndall Gold + was a popular choice and ordered the 7256 and 7257
Will report back after I've given them a test run.

If you are getting a squeak (I have never gotten the squeak) you can get a lubricant for teh back of the brake pad from any auto parts store. Put some of that on there, and also clean off teh brake pistons with brake cleaner and a tooth brush at the same time and see if it changes. What model is your bike?
Like i said i will check the grease situation and check back. Love the pads though way better than stock. will use for the rears once those go.
