I have a 2006 Deuce that has some slack in the drive line. It the most common issue with this the basic primary adjustment? My bike has 7000 miles on it. I have changed all the fluids but haven't checked the primary adjustment yet. Are the 2006 and older softails good with the stock compensator or is this something that I should change?
My understanding is the compensators are ok up to 2007, but I could be wrong. I have 30,000 on my '04 and have had no trouble with either the primary chain or compensator.
Okay, I took off the primary cover and checked the chain and it was a little sloppy. I adjusted as per the shop manual. With the bike up on a lift and in gear, I can move the rear wheel an couple inches before see the clutch basket or chain move. Is this normal? It appears that that is the slack I'm feeling while riding.

Have you also checked belt tension? May be feeling that.
I just had new tires put on. A 180 rear. I was looking at the chain again tonight, the nylon tension shoe has some pretty deep groves in it. I plan on replacing it before putting back together. I hope that and the chain adjustment will correct the slop in the drive line.

Well, I got all the parts to get it back together. $84. I hope that will get it done. The factory specs are 5/8 play. Can you run a little tighter without doing damage?

I didn't realize that a 2006 had a manual-adjust primary chain tensioner. Advise?
I installed the new primary chain tensioner nylon shoe. Didn't solve my issue. I notice when I had it up that the belt drive seemed loose. The manual for my Deuce says that the belt is adjusted with the rider weight on the bike. I set on the bike and the play in the belt was over an inch.
It is clear it needs adjustment. I guess tomorrow I will go buy the tool for the adjustment. Anyone have a loose belt before and did it cause you to have slack in the drive line?
