If a welder knows what he's doing with aluminum, he will heat the area with a torch first, then weld.

We'll see. But I am telling you if he does it that way it is either going to mess something up internally or it is going to crack again

if he drills the end of the crack it shouldn't spread and welding it shouldn't be a problem for an expereinced welder..

looking at the crack i wonder if the bolt actually came lose allowing the motor to lift and bang against the bolt. i would think if it was in an accident and repaired correctly, they would have caught the motor being cracked..

If it was me, for now I would drill a 1/8" hole where the crack stops and RIDE IT!

Default Got it welded

So I'm sure some of yall would disagree with the way I did this, but I'm happy with the results for now. If it cracks again than I'm no worse off than I was before, but the welder I used definitely knows his stuff. We spent about an hour and half prepping, cleaning, grinding, and clamping the piece for about five minutes of welding. He did say that the case was just sucking up the heat but he worked slowly and meticulously to make sure he was getting good penetration and then letting it cool down so not to hurt the case seals. He was constantly inspecting the welds with a magnifying glass and did several passes to beef up the area around the cracks.

If it becomes a problem in the future, then I'll deal with it then. For now it works well and I can ride.

Also, before anyone says anything, the bike was block at the frame to keep the primary completely off the ground, and we had a jack under the backbone to keep the handlebars of the ground. Quite the levitation act, but we got it well balanced. It still made me sad to see my bike laying on it's side like that.

I'll bet!! Welds look good to me, but I'm not a welder, just seen it done on aluminum for a few years. Let's hope it holds up til the rest of the bike falls apart around it!

Sounds like you had a good plan. Hopefully, the case halves still seal, and the area won't give you any more trouble.

I would have been pretty down too if I'd found that on a bike I just purchased. Good luck, and let us know how everything turns out.
