Possible crank case pressure building up in the oil tank?
Check the crank case vents to see if they are plugged.

I've never heard of this or had it happen to me. The old old tank dipsticks screwed in, not push in like now, so it's no wonder some have popped out. Be glad you weren't going down the road when it happened.

2012 Deluxe.I have the HD (Chinese?) temp dipstick, have had a lot of them and they all fit fine. The new one seemed loose but it never came out so I didnt think about it. Untill it came out on the road and dumped at least a qt of oil all over the side of my bike. What a mess.Hard to get burned on oil off exhaust&WWW.Brakes needed changed.
I went in a NAPA store when this happened and bought an "O" ring, put it on and it fits tight now. The stock one fits tighter than the crappy HD one.

Buy a thin O ring and put it in the grooves of the dipstick cap. It will help the seal.

Happened to me on my last ride.. Don't know what caused it, i know the oil level is right. When I got home, I noticed the dipstick was hanging there..my leg was the only thing that stopped it from flying away..had oil all down the side of the tank and dripped on to the exhaust.

This is what I have always been told would cause this. It has luckily never happened to me.

I am wondering if when drying the muffler you blow air into the exhaust pressurizing the crank case. This caused the dipstick missile. My 09 leaks oil out of the dipstick on every trip. I am planning on replacing it but might just try the o ring trick till I can get the one I want.

Good thing the new ones just push in then, or else something else would popped or busted in his engine. That would've sucked worse
