I can see both sides of this issue (location of the country excepted). On the one hand, some folks on this forum are very quick to disparage a manufacturer/distributor/supplier/etc. without going to them directly. That is not really fair given the varied skill level of folks here in the forum (I have no experience with the OP so I can not comment on his skill level - I suspect it is fine).

Folks who choose to work on their own bikes really have to understand that assembly-order importance, patience, and imperfect part interchangeability goes hand-in-hand with H-D and its aftermarket (and its own OEM replacement parts too - at times). It is easy to get frustrated, but it is helpful to see these "challenges" for what they are: opportunities to use one's problem-solving and mechanical skills. On more occasions than I can recount, I have had to use those very attributes to work on my own bike and to help others to fix theirs - often on the side of the road.

Beer helps too.

On the other hand, many manufacturers could do a much better job, overall, in design and quality control of their parts and accessories. Almost all could do a better job on developing good, comprehensive, detailed instructions. Some are better than others. Some are much worse. Personally, my experience has shown Softbrake has been one of the better ones in the design/Manufacturing/quality control area. Documentation...so-so.

That said, I am not convinced any part of the country has more skilled or inept wrenches than any other area. Some folks whine, and some do not. I am fortunate to personally know many of the most skilled mechanics who reside in all areas of the country. On more than a few occasions, I have witnessed their skill. I have also met some of the biggest whiners, who, unfortunately, are also scattered throughout our great nation. I try my hardest to avoid them at all cost. Sometimes frustration can get to the best of us.

And for the record, while Colorado is in the western half of the country, and is closer to the "West Coast" then, say, New Jersey, it is definitely not West Coast. We Californians, Oregonians, Washingtonians, and Alaskans are the only one's who can truly call themselves "West Coasters."

End of geography lesson.

BTW: Colorado is a beautiful state!

For the record, not trying to get involved in anyones pissing match. I ordered one earlier this summer and the owner was very helpful...straight and to the point. Actually, I decided to put it on earlier this week and had no issues to speak of, maybe the beers helped, I don't know.

Good Luck,

SNH

Couldn't agree more, for what they charge for this stuff and what you end up getting sometimes makes me shake my head and say WTF. For the most part I have been very happy with the parts I have purchased but have experienced this with both the aftermarket and the motor company. It's like they think " these harley guys are willing to pay big money for stuff so why not charge the $100 for a $10 part"

Everyone's skill level and the ability to improvise varies greatly. I have read threads on here about parts being total junk and not fitting right, when my experience has been the exact opposite. What seems very simple to some can be overwhelming to others.

It took me about 45 minutes to install mine, a little wiggle here and there and it was on. I just when back anf installed the custom dynamic LED in and it took about 5 minutes to do that. Aftermarket parts are not always perfect. But like others have said call and ask if they can help before bashing them.
