Default adding fairing to heritage classic

I am not sure if this is posted in the correct area but as the title says, i am toying with the idea of adding a fairing to my 2000 heritage classic. I understand that a heritage will never be a bagger, but im making the bike my own and have no interest in buying a bagger at this time. i have decided on 2 or 3 options, 1: a wide open custom fairing, 2: a dragonfly fairing, or 3: modify an OEM street glide inner and outer to fit. Each has its reasons why i like it,however i am not sure if i like that the after market fairings are geared toward all stereo. I liked the idea of the OEM style due to the ability to add gauges for all the bells and whistles, but i dont think the inner will fit with my apes. Does any one have personal experience with any of these fairings? Has anyone modded an OEM fairing? Any advice is appreciated.

I don't have personal experience but I've done a lot of research on this myself. From what I've gathered an OEM would fit. It should bolt right up it the windshield mounts. Someone can chime in on that if I'm wrong. Unless you find a steal on the fairing that could be a costly mod. I "think" the passing lights have to go, signals moved etc. the bars will not fit. If you look at bagger bars, they all have a bend at the bottom because of the fairing. Depending on what kind of bars you have you you may be able to sale them and get back some of your new bar purchase. After market has its perks tho. Most snap right onto windshield mounts and can be removed in seconds to go back naked. I'm with you on the hd fairing. I think they look the best. I like reckless after that. I've heard they make good products. Hope this is helpful.

I love my fairing.. Check out Woodys or Reckless. Mine is one from Exotic Body Parts but took alot of work to get right. I love the tunes..

I researched it for about 6 months before i pulled the trigger, I contacted all the companies out there that make aftermarket fairings and i went with Woodys, hands down Glenn was the best to talk to and he was in constant contact with me while i was waiting for him to make it. Fit and Finish was Superb I have heard some disappointing comments about the other companies check out his website, email him or heck give him a call, do your own research and pick what works for you. Its the best investment ive made so far to my bike, I never take it off .

First off, thank you for the replys so far. i have been doing alot of research too, the bug bit me right after i installed a set of FLH hard bags in may. I really do not want to swap handle bars so i am thinking that the oem fairing may be off the table. i noticed that alot of the after market fairings are fiberglass and some are ABS. What advantages are there to fiber glass? I also have found a pretty even split between 1 piece and 2 piece fairings. I like the idea of being able to take the outer off and work on the internals, but i dont think it would be a deal breaker. any thoughts on this?

I looked at a couple vendors in Daytona last year and watched them installing them on softails. Some had marine grade radios in them, some with none and you had to add your own. They were kinda cool but I decided not to go that route.

MIne is fiberglass and i think its the better choice , finish seems to be better. Also i would def go with a fairing that has an outer and an inner so you can add what ever you want to it for example I put a marine sirius reciever in mine and also added a tachometer after. MIne came with 4 speakers from Woodys and i added the reciever. The speakers sound great and all my riding up here is high speed 70plus mph Also with the Woodys you can add the Freedom wings on the sides which when its cold blocks a little more wind or when its hot you can direct airflow to the engine or towards your legs which is nice I also added a usb port on mine to play downloaded music and Glenn installed a cig lighter recept. to charge any device. Ive taken mine apart 3 times since ive had it to add diff things its easy takes about 5 min to do i have more pics i think if your interested

Smile Got Mine on e-bay

We did this just a little over a year ago. I bought mine on e-bay(200.00)
I went over to Dallas to the industrial area and picked it up. It is a no name fiberglass unit, because my hubby can work on glass.
He had to do quite abit of work on it it was rough. Then he painted it & a set of HD hard bags that we bought off craigs list. (300.00 bags & 180.00 paint)
I ordered marine speakers from JVC because I wanted white. (40.00)
Hubby talked me in to a black radio and I wish I had ordered the white one. (99.00)
He also put a cig lighter in the fairing for me. (10.00) My FAV!!!!
I have the lower wind deflectors and the fairing, it can be remove and the windshield put on in about 5 min. I wanted a taller windshield for the fairing so we had a shield with a crack on the bottom corner and he cut it off and put it on the fairing, worked great. (FREE)
The radio works great and the IPOD is what I use almost all of the time.
The CD player is prone to skipping on big bumps. So I spent about $850 and got fairing bags and stereo. You can do it on a shoestring if you really try and have a few skills. Hope this helps

I definitely want a two piece fairing, i just needed someone else to say it too haha. The thing that i am worried about it with a fiber glass unit is breaking/splintering and sending more debris out if, God forbid, in the event of a crash minor or major. I always think of worst case scenarios. i have also been thinking about the OEM fairing all day, and it seems that the only thing stopping the oem inner from fitting is the gauge holes on either side of the stereo. In my mind i was trying to figure out if i could cut those to allow room for my handle bars to avoid having to put street glide apes on. But then i started thinking about the dead centers again..... I have a feeling that even if i do go with an after market unit it may take some time to make my mind up.
