Default Breakout Speedo Flip (How To Thread)

Okay folks, I made a short 5 minute video (next post shortly to follow once Youtube uploads) and will include some photos (only photos of items on confusion) as well as to how to do this for those interested.

Here is a list of tools you will need:

- T15 Torx (to remove speedo)
- Size 6 Metric Allen Key (to remove speedo assembly from handlebars)
- 10mm socket (to remove positive battery cable bolt)
- 1/4" socket (to remove electronic module (turn signal/high beam/oil)
- Pick (various, I used one with a slight bend at the tip)
- Razor Blade (to trim speedo plastic underside and top pop off turn signal top bracket)

(1) Remove 4 bolts holding the speedo to the handlebars:

(2) Lay down a towel and lay handlebars on tank

(3) Remove speedo cable and speedo (set speedo aside, we will get to it later)

(4) Using 1/4 socket, remove 2 bolts holding electronic module (turn signal/high beam/oil module)

(5) Using a razor blade, gently pry the black plastic bezel away from the white electronic module, a little pressure goes a long way, be gentle

(6) Once you've removed the black bezel, flip over the transparency (you'll also have to notch a small piece of the black transparency to allow it to sit flush (note the little white raised circle) that keeps it from sitting flush. Gently make a V shape with your razor for this cutout

(7) Put the black bezel back onto the white module (I didn't re-glue mine but you can if you want - just don't get crazy)

(8) Reinstall the module (both white and black pieces should be reassembled) and ensure you install it the same way you removed it. NOTE: You can't, I repeat you can't install it upside down or you will both pinch the wires when you reinstall the handlebars. This should be self explanatory because if you try, you'll realize you physically can't anyway by design

(9) Now that you've reinstalled the electronic module, remount the speedo bracket in the new position on TOP of the bars (set the actual speedo aside, this won't be installed until the very last step)

(10) Here is the tricky part. Because you weren't able to invert (flip) the electronic module when you reinstalled it because you'd crimp the wires with the handlebar, now all of your lights in the display are wrong. Your left turning signal shows as your right turning signal, your right turning shows as your left turning signal and your oil and high beams are reversed. To fix this you have to disassemble the speedo connector and relocate 4 pins (2 turning signal pins, the oil and high beam pin)

(11) Disassemble the speedo connector. It's put together in four pieces btw (Gray bracket that snaps into speedo is one piece, the green rubber is one piece, blue pin that goes through top black plastic is one piece and the black piece on top is a separate piece).

(12) Start by using a pick to pull the blue piece out (don't lose these parts)

(13) Next slide loose the gray snap bracket as far down the cables as you can (don't lose the two pink plug inserts, you need to reinstall them later) - I'd recommend you take before and after photos in case you forget where you unplugging and plugging new pins in at

(14) Next slide loose the green rubber as far down the cables as you can

(15) Next, using a pick, may two picks, gentle put the pick on both sides of the black plastic top piece and pry them away and up to remove this piece to expose the pin connectors underneath

(16) Now you should be able to remove and relocate the 4 pins (diagram attached and photos attached, ensure you have the right pins in the right spots)

(17) Make sure that you pull all 4 pins all the way out through both the green and gray bracket and reinstall into their new locations. I didn't do this right the first time and wasn't able to seat the pieces back into place - learn from my oversight

(18) Once all of the pins are relocated, it's time to put the black plastic piece back on top where the pins terminate. This is a PITA and will require the use of a pick (whatever flavor you have) to align each individual pin into the holes....it's a PITA. Jiggle gently the black bracket while you align the pins in place and then you should be able to pull it down and lock it in place. NOTE: The first time I installed the pins and optested it my left turning signal wasn't working because I didn't have the pin seated properly when I reinstalled the pins so ensure your pins are pushed tight to the top of the black bracket)

(19) Slide both the green rubber and gray plastic clip back into place and reinstall the cable bracket into the actual Speedo (don't reinstall the speedo yet, just install cable)

(20) Reinstall positive battery terminal and optest to see both turning signals work properly, oil illuminates (will be a blue color now vice red) and ensure the high beams illuminate (will be a red color now vice blue)

(21) If the optest is complete and everything works, you're gonna want to reinstall the speedo but it won't just slide in. You need to notch out the plastic in a spot to make it fit (easy to do with a sharp razor or dremel).

(22) If the speedo slides in and bolt holes line up, reinstall the speedo using the two T15 bolts and "You're done"!

Gotcha. put it back. You are going MOD CRAZY, man! I mean, are you doing this because you want a tank lift, as I think I read in another thread, and without it the lift will not work? I thought I saw some guy here had flipped his risers around which allowed him to keep the speedo under, and allowed the lift? While I wasn't crazy about the look of the flipped risers, this is a whole other story. Maybe it'll grow on me.

I have to agree. Looks way out of place flipped up like that.

I'm not sure that I like the look of the relocation ( maybe it grows on you ) but I must say that your thread is pretty clear and concise on how to accomplish the task ... Great job!

I'm hoping that with the tank list it will fill the gap, if not, I'll move it back. Time will tell but as of now it does look "out of place", I agree.
