Terrible "Clonk" when shifting into first

On cold start up, let it idle while you put on your gear. Then mount the bike, pull in the clutch and hold it for a few seconds , maybe even give the throttle a light blip or two, let it idle back down - then drop it into 1st. Should be a notable decrease in the "clunk".
But after all, It's a friggin Harley. You gotta learn to love the "clunk". My sporty does it wonderfully when cold, has been for over 32,000 miles and no negative issues what-so-ever.

I always hold the clutch in when starting, an old school thing I guess, let it warm up a little hold the clutch in for 30 sec and much better or gone most of the time, you get used to it after a while
