What are your thoughts on a 14 year old heritage springer, motor seems to be in good shape as is trans. Has mileage in the upper 50k range. I have to go check it out and wonder what suggestions to look for especially with the front end. All appears to be original. What major parts should I be concerned with on a higher mileage bike. For the price they are asking and even putting a couple grand into it I finally may have a springer.
I once owned a 2000 suede green heritage springer, loved the bike. I think the heritage springer is a true classic. The springer front end is expensive to build and maintain. Its hard on the neck bearings, just a cost of owning a great looking bike. The weak spot was the can bearings, the factory extended the warranty on the can bearings due to there high rate of failure.
If I was buying another heritage springer I would look for one with the "cheese grater" rear bumper and fringe bags. As you can tell, I have fond memories of that bike, if this one checks out and you like it; buy it!
I just bought a 2002 Heritage Springer with 46k on it. Front end is the main area of concern (bearings etc). I took mine to one of the dealerships for a 50k service because I had no idea of it's service history and, fortunately, there were no major repairs needed. Also cam chain tensioners could be worn at this point.
Thank you. Interesting, I always thought they were the same.
The FL Springer classic was made 2005-7, it had a powder coated front end. The Heritage Springers were made 97-2003 with either EVO or Twinkie motors. The FX springers were made right through 07-(i think)..
To OP,
It would be nice if you could find out what work has been do to it with that kind of mileage, but it's not a deal breaker deepending on the asking price and general condition. 50K is lifter time IMO, cam bearings are an issue but likely already changed, it really deepends on how much preventitive maintenancee you want to do. What are they asking and where are the pics..
