Default 20" apes

hi all,
im looking at upgrading my 16" apes to 20s. my bike came with some roland sands style 16" apes and i'm looking at changing them to drag specialities 1 1/4" buffalo apes.
with the current bars if im sitting slouched my arms are probably at a 80 degree angle and hands are about shoulder width apart.
i sat on a deluxe the other day which had la choppers 20"s on and they came up to about my chin and were 38" wide i think.
the ones im looking at getting are 40 wide.

so my question is this, has anyone upgrade to 20"s? from 16"s? and how is it to ride off the motorway? and whats your general feedback?

im between 6'1 and 6'2. i do a lot of my riding in urban areas during the week and highways on the weekends. im looking for something comfortable as the current bars are too narrow for me, but i would also like a bit more height as well.

thanks guys

I can't answer your question directly, but 40" is really wide for apes! I have 17" apes (34" wide) on a Deluxe and 18" apes (38" wide) on a Heritage and I personally wouldn't want to go wider than 38". Even 38" is a bit wide for my liking (I am just over 6 foot). SJ Ron

Yes, I went from the Harley 16" apes, to 20" Buky Bars Straight Apes. they were the widest traditional apes I could find. the 16" in riding position where maybe an inch over my shoulders at most, and those were pushed forward. With the 20" I have them in line with the front forks, and they are around my forehead area, and definitely outside shoulder width apart, elbows are maybe 105 degrees.

I'm 6'2" and find them very comfortable.

hi sanjuanron
yeah the guy i met the other day said not to go above 38". this is what im worried about as to go from 16" to 20" i need new wiring and cables ontop of the bars so the price goes dramatically up. as the bars are 150$ but then the cables and wires are nearly 240$ ontop of that.
i keep getting a table measure and measuring out the 40" and holding my hands up to it and it seems ok but im more concerned at low speed turning.

when you say 38 is too wide is that for motorway riding or just in general ?

cheers

cheers dude, how do you find the handling on your new ones at low speed?

im trying to go about eye to forehead height with the new bars so the 20" ones might be right for me, my torso it quite tall so it could be that they come up to my eyes.

thanks for the help dude

Its not bad at all. You learn to adapt. My torso is also tall, makes buying shirts annoying lol.

I've ridden a lot with 38" wide bars and I found them to be a really comfy width for me and I'm only 5'11. Was a little different a low speed Corning at first but in a matter of days it was like I had been riding with them for years. Easy as

I ride my 38" apes all over the mountains. You get used to the width, but it takes awhile to get completely comfortable with the slow speed maneuvering and the 38" width also gives you more of the parachute effect on the highway compared to the 34" width apes. As I mentioned, I am 6' and ape width in the mid 30s feels more natural than apes that are close to 40. SJ Ron
