Default Samson true duals on Softail... shift rod hitting rear pipe

UPS delivered my Samson true dual headers and 33" longtails late this afternoon. I installed them on my '99 Heritage tonight. The bent shiftrod that Samson provided is sitting very close to the rear headpipe. So close in fact that it hits the pipe when in comes forward for downshifting, making it nearly impossible to do so. I ran out of daylight and will work on it again tomorrow. But it looks as though the best fix is going to be either re-indexing the shift arm on the splines of the shaft coming out of the transmission to move it further back away from the pipe or possibly putting more of a bend in the shiftrod to provide added clearance.

Has anybody else experienced the same problem and what was your fix?

Can I get the arm off of the transmission shaft to re-index it without having to pull the primary?

Any help is appreciated.

You will need to remove the entire primary housing to rotate the rear lever. Not hard, but not really the right solution either.

Can you adjust the fittings that screw into the shift linkage to possible extend it as needed?

I can, and that's the first thing that I'm going to try. I am hoping that between that and maybe having to add a little more bend to the linkage rod, it will give me the clearance I need. I want to avoid pulling the primary if possible.

I had the same problem, I loosed every single screw on my left pipe and remove the tail piece. I got a 2x4 and a mallet and gently tap the exhaust forward, needless to say it didn't look like it moved, I tight everything back on, and I was able to gain the 1/4 inch I need it for the shift rod.
Just my experience, there is more wiggle room in that exhaust that it appears, give it a try before you mess with the shift rod.

Thanks Transporter. It's all still loosely assembled at this point. I briefly tried moving the parts around to gain clearance before I quit for the night. I'll try some more (a little more forcefully) before I do anything too drastic.

yep. same problem when i installed mine.

like previous posts, you gave to loosen pipes and linkage and just keep tinkering with spacing until you get it correct. it took me a long time to do this. but, finally i found the sweet spot and all is well.

Worked out the issue today. I was happy with the fit and placement of the pipes as they were. So what I ended up doing was just add a little more bend to the linkage rod. All is well now. Shifter is working as it should with no contact between the linkage and the rear pipe.

You can also spin the heim joint on the shiffter rod to give a touch more length.

Default Samson true duals

I just put my Samson True Duals with 39" Cholos on my 03 Heritage and the left side doesn't fit. The heat shield don't fit flush to the slip-on. About an inch more to fit flush and they are slid all the way forward. PISSED! I waited 6 weeks for these things.

Can you post some pics of what you are describing? I am getting ready to order some mini cholos and trying to get a sense of what could go wrong and the fix for it.
