Default The scoop

I talked with the tuner dude today. I offered nothing and just asked what was the deal with the dyno. It seems that they have totally redone the dyno machine since my trip through last November. Also, dynos were then done by an employee who's no longer there. The current tuner has redone several bikes on the new machine that were previously done by the previous tuner on the old machine and has found that the numbers were significantly elevated either by the machine or the technique (or both) used by the tuner. He gave a few examples of how placement of certain monitors can affect the results obtained. He said he wished that he had redyno my bike at stage one prior to adding the cams so that we could get a new baseline, but he had not.
As to the other factors, he said that the true duals are the best look by far for a nostalgic bike (his words, not mine) but it would be difficult to find a worse performance pipe. He said he was unaware that those were the pipes he'd be adding when we talked about cams, but that he really doesn't think he would have done anything different had he know. He added that bigger cams don't really work well with the kind of riding I told him I do, which is mostly riding the country roads at 35-50 mph.
Bottom line: while the hp dropped slightly on paper, he feels it certainly is much better than if we had done just the pipes and not done the cams. In his opinion, both hp and torque are significantly better than they were, even though the numbers on the sheet don't seem to support that. I believe him and am satisfied, but I would still like that "hold on tight" feeling. I doubt I want to pay for it.

To get a true comparison it would have to be run on the same machine under the same conditions. It would have been interesting to see this done in steps, run it before the new mods, change the cam and re run it, then change the exhaust and run it again. But who has that kind of time and money especially if you're paying for the labor. As far as the true duals, I think he has a point, neither cylinder's exhaust pulse is helping scavenge the others, like they were on your 2 into 1 system. Bottom line: if you're happy with the way it runs, ride it, if you're not seek a second opinion, after all its only a number on a piece of paper.
