Default My 2010 FLSTC won't start...

My 2010 Heritage will not start. When I press the start switch the starter cranks a few turns the makes a loud clatter noise. I assume that is the sound of the solenoid quickly engaging and disengaging. I replaced the starter relay (HD part number 31522-00C) with a standard relay I got from O'Reilly (BWD R3223) but it made no difference. The battery is fully charged. I also noticed there is no spark while the engine cranks and the battery discharges quickly from about 14.5V that the battery tender charges it to. The check engine lights turns on for about 4 seconds when the run switch is in the on position which means (according to the service manual) that the ECM has power and has completed self test successfully.

If the battery quickly discharges from a fully charged state that quickly, I would say you have a bad cell in the battery. I would have the battery tested (load tested) to ensure it's healthy before I spent any more money or time chasing other issues.

Same thing happens when I take off the bike battery then connect the car battery (600+ amps). The solenoid clatter gets louder and stronger, cables get very hot. Obviously drawing a ton of current, at this time I suspect a starter issue.

Um, yeah, don't ever hook up a car battery to a bike. Put a voltage meter on your bike battery, check the volts.. while still checking the volts, hit the starter, if it drops below 8 or so, you may want to look in to a new battery. This sounds like an issue I had with my stock HD battery which died after about a year and a half, even on a trickle charger.

Did what you suggested, voltage at the terminals dropped to about 6V...

I've read of late of several 10 bike batteries are toast already..

don't know the that that's the norm for the new ones, as my 07 lasted 5yrs almost to the day.

just glad that you figured it out, without having to do a lot of trail and error...

Sounds to me like your starter clutch is bad. I had the same problem over a year ago. I replaced it with an All ***** one and haven't had any problem since. I hope you didn't screw anything up with using a car batter.

replaced my 10 street bob battery yesterday, i knew it was going when all it did was turn over and no start. It also was taken out of the bike and brought inside in the winter on a charger. nothing lasts forever, please step away from the car battery.
