I'm not sure the difference between my compressor (Softail Slim w/ABS) setup and yours. I didn't need to tap the holes but I'm guessing you needed to do this to simply widen the holes for the different bolts?? The photo below shows the bolts which would go through to the shock. The black tab on the right is where the compressor bolts up.

When I added the bolts I had to remove at least one of the washers because the bolt wouldn't reach. Have you tried that. If that doesn't work than maybe getting longer bolts. If all else fails contact JD, he's helped me on a number of occasions.

Tapping is not hard. Take your time. Will the bolt go in without the air compressor and bracket? Will it tighten without bracket and compressor?

Meh, tapping is pretty easy. Hell, I actually broke the tap that I got from JD, but was able to get the broken piece out without issue.

The holes that you're tapping on the 04 are really deep. Like 3"+ deep.

If you're worried that the provided bolts aren't long enough to grab enough threads, take the bolt to your local Ace Hardware and get you a replacement with some more length to it.

Also, these bolts aren't holding the whole bike together. No need to torque these suckers down to hard.
