They need to be about a foot or so so you can see past your shoulders....
That was always an issue with me as well. I still have this habit of pulling my shoulder in when I look in my mirrors....even though I can see perfectly well in the setup on the custom...!!!!

Could not find the Nighttrain stock mirrors??? Have an aftermarket set of HD mirrors and a new set of Kuryakyn lighted mirrors in the garage....also have the stock mirrors off my '07 Custom.....they are short stemed but probably not the same as on the '04 Train??? Sorry ...

Get the long ones. The short are just long enough to see the lane next to you and your elbows. The cops don't think not being able to see straight back into your own lane is a valid excuse.
