The $900 is the retail cost of the kit... no clue what a shop would charge to install it... but it is a project.... you have to actually rebuild the tranny.. it comes with a book of instructions but it's not a project for the faint at heart.......
There have been two transmissions that I know of that have locked up in 5th gear...... both of these guys actually posted on forums..... now BOTH bikes had the tranny dip stick missing when examined.... but no way of knowing wether they broke of as a result of the failure or actually caused it.... ( which came first...chicken or the ????)
Two things I've noticed reading about the 07 tranny noise complaints all over the web. 1. Softails don't seem to be affected as much as other models. 2. Most of the complaints are from people who bought their bikes soon after 07 models were released.
Is it possible that Harley fixed something on the production line? Are folks still buying new bikes in March 07 that have the same problem?

My FLTRwas built the week of 3/19/07. It definitely has the noisy 5th gear. On the other hand, my '07 FXDL, which I took delivery of the same day the '07 models were announced (7/14/06), had absolutely no tranny noise.
So no, there has been no "fix" put into place for the '07 models based on my experience.
I have two problems with my 07 fatboy's trans...it's a softail
1. Finding Neutral is a _______ ______ BLEEP _____. Why the hell do I have to keep on sitting there popping the gear up and down... 1 to maybe 15 times in a row to get it in N. I must look like a damn fool doing this....
2. I only hear it when I put my windshield on.. and cruising around 50..in 5th gear... something like a hamster run wheel going around and around.. its rather faint(i do have loud exhaust), but once u hear it.. it bothers you a lot, cause u will keep hearing it.
I'm scheduled for my 1,000 service this week, so I will question the dealer and see what kind of response I get. Harley can't allow this to go on too long if it's a legit issue. Having a Tranny lock up especially in a higher gear is just a lawsuit waiting to happen.
How many of the posts suggesting spending $900+ to eliminate a slight change in sound in 5th gear are by baker employees, or those with a financial interest in Baker? I notice that most of them have very few posts on the forum.

Read my posts carefully.....I have no financial intrest in Baker, in fact I have a substantial investment in HD stock.... and if you think the only problem you have with your '07 tranny is a "slight change in sound"......you really need to look inside one! Plastic bearing cases, snap rings holding shafts back, flexible trap doors????? Do these things sound like minor problems to you???? Hell, we think nothing of dropping $3K on paint or chrome....... my brother is sooooo happy with the results of the Baker kit..... how can you not fix this before cosmetic upgrades?????
So now that we're late into the '07 model year, has anyone actually heard of a tranny failure that was related to the 5th gear noise?
Thought not.
I might have a transmission failure in the works. I bought my '07 right when it came out. Have had quite a few problems with it since I bought it. One, the main topic - the transmission.
There has been brass metal shavings in it ever since the 1000 mile check up. Have done a second transmission flush since, still metal shavings. Is it related to the 5th gear noise? I don't know. Is it related to the poor construction? A good probability. Bottom line: Shouldn't be paying this much money for poor quality. I have payed much less for a foreign bike that has 30,000 miles and hasn't had one problem yet!!! And Harley owners should not just accept it. That is why things are so expensive, because we tolerate it.
You can dislike me if you want, but HoofnHog gave us some valuable information here about the materials in the transmission and I think just dismissing it like this is not what one should do, but use it to make quality better.
I bought a 07 softail two weeks ago it has a noise in 5th gear ,Talked to the service dept they after the breakin 1000 miles they would change the tranny oil to syn mobli gear oil i thing he said 40-75 he showed me the oil you can get it at the parts store, some bikers never heard the noise after the change in most bikes it would kill the noise by 90%,I know my bike has the noise after a few miles or after it gets hot? I have 400 miles on my bike,I will let hd do the first service and put the mobli in my tranny,I talked one rider on his first service they replace the tranny oil with mobli oil he stated that the noise went a a way ,that the hd oil is to thin for the tranny?
Odly enough, the '39 ULH and '57 FL I used to have also had snaprings on the teans shafts. So did my '52 Plymouth, and that transmission held up just fine after I stuffed in a DeSoto Hemi.
