Default Dyna owner considering a new softail..

So, I have a 2012 street bob.The fatboy lo and slim have been catching my eye for awhile now, so I went to a local dealer and sat on both. Like the fit and talked to a salesman about test riding. They have a 2011 lo and 2 new slims and will let me take 'em for a spin. The 2011 lo is pretty similar in price, with the new slim being a little bit more money. I don't owe anything on my current bike, so this endeavor wont be too bad, financially speaking.

Another question is for anyone with experience on these 2 bikes- Does the bigger rear tire sacrifice any handling? Does the smaller tire on the slim feel squirrely on the road? My SB's rear tire is a 160, kinda in between the 2.

Second question is for anyone who came off of a Dyna- is the handling of the softail gonna be a drastic difference? I like to get on it a bit, but I don't scrape anything on corners or anything, like those who might ride very aggressively. I currently have reduced reach forwards & heel rests on my bike, along with apes. Seems like the geometry of the softail would be even more comfortable.

Going from my 04 dyna to a 13 deluxe, I noticed that I sit in the bike as opposed to on it. I can maneuver it way more better. Less idle and 3000 rpm shake. Very happy with the softail.

Been fortunate to have a Low rider in the garage to ride the last 5 years with the softails.Quick ride at night I would ride J's dyna. Rode it to work the last couple of months to hang the for Sale sign on it,round trip 110miles a day. Fun but not the Night Train or Springer.Two different rides. As you say like a bagger you sit on a Dyna. A softail you sit in. No comparison to me. While each *** thats sits in a seat your opinion may not be mine when it comes to ride.The Dyna had 19k on it when we sold it.The Train has just shy of 75k on it.whats that tell you.

Dynas have about 30 degrees of lean angle and Softails have about 25.
If you have reduced reach on your on your Bob your pegs are an inch higher so even more lean angle than stock. Even if you don't ride aggressively, you'll notice the difference in handling.

From what I here you are better off keeping the Street Bob because softail are not design at all for aggressive riding and yes I had Dyna low rider. The street bob is a great bike and if you are happy with it keep it.

Stock on my bike were mids...I have heel rests which hang lower than the reduced reach forward footpegs and I don't scrape them- I guess thats a very specific setup and I can't expect anyone to respond right off the top who has it. Thanks for the feedback. I will have to see how the test ride goes I suppose!

you might be right. I like all the feedback so far, I'm looking forward to the test ride. I think whats getting me is I just really like the softail look and change from what I have

My buddy has a night train with a 200 in the rear and he contends that once you go over that is when the handling starts to get different. As for the 140 on the slim, mine feels more planted in the corners than my sporty did, and I think my sporty had a 160 in the rear. I think this has to do more with the weight of the bike than the tire width, though. One thing I did notice is I felt like I could roll the bike better on the sporty and I partially attribute that to the tire profile, but the lower center of gravity and higher weight of the slim probably has as much or more to do with that than the tire profile.

Truthfully I wish the slim had a 160 or a 180 in the back, but I don't know for sure how much affect that would have on handling.
