Does anyone know how many ounces of fork oil goes into a dry tube. I know wet it requires 12.9 oz and ill be damned if I'm gonna remove the forks and measure oil. Bike is 2006 FLSTC. Thx
No No No! You must put down the beer and TV remote, remove the forks and do it properly.
Don't have the specs for your bike but I've concluded that roughly 1 ounce remains in the tubes when they are drained while on the bike. Add that to the 12.9 and you're somewhere just shy of the 14oz neighborhood.
Thanks. Just had some front end work done and was told 13 oz on each side. Book sez when forks are off to measure level in inches/mm. I kinda figured there were an oz or two left when draining them, but wasnt sure.
As far as putting down the remote... Hell no. It's football season (I know, it's preseason) and the beer is in the fridge.
MODEL - OZ - CC - IN - MM
FLSTF, FLSTC - 12.9 - 382 - 4.72 - 119.9
NOTE
See Table 1-5. Fork oil amounts can be measured two ways.
● Use oz./cc measurement if fork is left in frame.
● Use in./mm measurement if fork is disassembled. In this
case, oil level is measured from top of fork tube, with
spring removed and fork fully compressed.
As does mine. The forks were disassembled and was not measured b4 installation. If the fork oil was drained and replaced, it calls for 12.9. I guess I should have phrased the question is how much oil is left in the fork tubes after draining.
There is a measurement from the top also somewhere in the manual. An ounce either way is not going to make a difference. Very little is left if you give it time to run out.
I no longer have to fool with fork oil since installing Mono Tubes. Life is good. But I always, and it is a pain in the ***, removed the forks, cycled them on a bench to remove all fluid the used the fill and measure procedure. Much more accurate. I found a discrepancy in my HD service manual. The amount of oil needed to meet the specified height measurement in (Inches) did not equal the specified liquid amount in (Ounces). Go figure.
