GL, and enjoy your Heritage.

I Always to go to 1st and then tap her up,, its still harder even after 50k miles to find neutral from 2nd..

Also a new bike and a new owner after a few miles will find it gets easier.

I guarantee you it IS between 1st & 2nd. Google has a much better search function than the forum. Here is some casual surfing:

Thanks for the help. Was pretty sure it was not just me. Will ride 50 miles or so tonight and see if that helps.

Mike
You have been a member of this forum for six years. Even as a lurker you should know that finding neutral on a new bike is difficult. As others have suggested, it is likely a very simple clutch adjustment.

As far as this "design thing" is concerned, you may be onto something. I would ask the dealer to replace your transmission under warranty.

Mine can still be a PITA (the 12 Heritage) but it definitely got easier after 5000 miles.

I agree with the mileage thing. Mine was tough to find when new. After about 5000 miles it was much easier.

I am glad this appears to be a standard feature as I used to find it rather difcicult to find Neutral on my 13 Heritage.

One time I was rolling up to the gate to get on base here. When I stopped at the gate guard, I started fighting to find neutral for a good 10 seconds. It felt like a lot longer as the Japanese guard stood ther head cocked slightly watching me. Finally found Neutral, dug out my ID and showed it to him. He looks at gives it back and said "I need to see your MSF card."

Appreciate the answers, and ignoring the sarcasm. Been a member for six years but only owned this bike for 2 weeks and ridden it 34 miles. I still cannot shift up form first and find neutral, even with my hand it won;t go there. Have to go back to the dealers area for a social function so will trailer it up and let them look at it. Sportster was the only other Harley I had this problem with and it went away after 1500 miles.

Adjust the clutch or have someone else do it. Your bike is fine. Next time you're having trouble getting it in neutral, keep the clutch in and turn the engine off. Then lightly lift the shift lever with your foot up into neutral. With no load it'll be easy. That will verify that you need a clutch adjustment.

I'd do it pretty soon. If the clutch isn't disengaging completely that's hard on the transmission cogs. My guess is that you can feel a non synchronized shift every now and then, probably between 1st and 2nd. That's usually a sign the clutch needs adjusted. Do a search on my user name. I just wrote a post on how to do it and what tools you need. No need to cart it to the dealer.

My neutral got worse and worse on the deluxe. Just had her in for 15k service ( well at 18,700 miles).
I have a prepaid package. Anyhow during they decided I needed a new clutch package. Which was crazy this early. So I asked them to submit to extended service which they approved it ( which was a miracle). They were the only ones to adjust it and it got worse last year after a service. My point is if you really can't find neutral get the thing adjusted now so you don't blow your clutch. I had to be very loud to get it done. First they called me just to sign off on me paying almost $600 to replace it. Ride home neutral was a breeze.
