Visiting Asheville / BRP - snow/ice and SALT this weekend???
of course, my luck, I get a long awaited vacation and it looks like temps will be freezing at night with possible snow/freezing rain accumulations.
I thought for sure this time of year would be safe for not worrying about salt on the road and go figure, itll be in the high 50s in NY.
my question is for anyone that lives in or know the area well will they likely salt the roads ?
I try to avoid riding on salted roads at all costs and it would be pretty depressing to drive 800 miles south with my bike and not ride or have to ride on salt roads.
Don’t sweat it. I don’t believe the forecast is calling for any weather in our area that’ll warrant salt. At least the BRP will definitely not be treated, although the Park service could close the gates if there is ice or snow. If the BRP gets closed down, that won’t ruin your trip…….ALL the other roads around here are just as interesting, if not more…..twisties everywhere. The further north you ride from Marion, the higher the elevation, so stay lower and less likely hood of salt or weather.
Im out of town this weekend. If I was around, I’d show ya the area! Enjoy WNC.
if you or anyone else on this forums is interested in doing a ride with the ole ladies, Id be more than interested in having someone take the lead and show us the ropes.
I used BrP as an example just to fit in subject line, but wed like to hit all the famous motorcycle roads in the area.
Forecast says rain today, so Im sure any existing salt in the region has been thoroughly washed away, my concern is any new salt laid down during the overnight freeze with wet weather. In NY, the municipal depts are saltaholics and cover the road in salt just to justify overtime and budget for buying more salt.
by Monday, itll be in the 70s, so would I be the only biker riding salt in 70 degrees haha ?
I’ll be back Monday, shoot me a PM and I’m sure there will be a day or two that I can show y’all around.
From Marion head south on sugar hill rd, to bill creek rd over to Lake Lure, continue on 9/64/74 thru chimney rock stay on 9, then old fort sugar hill towards Old Fort, and 70 back to Marion.
If I can get ours going, may show you a few others
looking for a decent town with some night life / good food. I heard Asheville is the spot for food, and we are food lovers, but I also heard its like Williamsburg Brooklyn hipster vibe and we dont reallly swing that way. Might have to make the sacrifice for the sake of impressive food.

When the wife and I visited Asheville last May, we didn't plan ahead for the restaurants. That was a mistake, almost every place we wanted to go was already booked up. Just something to consider. Definitely some real good food spots. Town is a little hipster, but it's not terrible.
