Daytona is WAY overcommercialized and they'll continue to take you're money as long as folks keep paying the ridiculous prices. I've only been once. Over $200 per night for a hotel room and it took us over an hour to go 5 miles. Screw that, never again. Wanna have lots if fun, stick with the smaller rallies.
one of biggest rallies in the country is overcommercialized? any more so than laconia, sturgis, laughlin? get a clue - what did u expect?
do some research and educate ur self so that u can't wyne about being a sucker. [:'(]

Uhh, did you read the subject? I don't think Sturgis, Laughlin, nor Laconia was mentioned, but since you brought them up, yeah, they're way overcommercialized too. Still doesn't mean I wouldn't go to one of them though, just to see what the hype was all about. As far as educating myself, I did my research and still tried it anyhow.Guess I'm a glutton for punishment. The "Spring rally was a freakin' ripoff, no matter which way you look at it. I would like togo to Biketoberfest just to see the difference. To each their own though, so enjoy getting ripped off at Daytona Bike week and keep following the herd, you deserve it.

Agree, unless you're into drinking/partying, not much to do at Daytona. Went to Sturgis on 06 - much more to do/see and ride. Only thing that keeps me coming to Daytona is the "timing" - great time to ride to a much warmer climite.

I've been going to Sturgis and Daytona off and on since 1984. Just the fact that a half million bikers can get together in one place legally is an achievement. Hell, from what I hear they don't even want us there (Daytona). I'd hate to lose another place to party. Hell, I went last year and stayed in a condo for free in Orlando. For those prices I could afford to ride to Daytona every day. You'll never find a quiet motorcycle rally. We are loud and we like to party in big groups.

Now, let's look at the town of Daytona. This is not a retirement community like I've seen stated before. It's like buying a house next to a stock car track and then bitching to the police about the noise on Saturday night. It's friggin Daytona. You got motorcycles, NASCAR and college students running everywhere. At least the bikers and NASCAR people spend some money. All the students do is get drunk and fall off of balconies.

I am going to try Leesburg this year. Daytona & Sturgis have turned into a flee market selling overpriced: t-shirts, carnival food, and accommodations. Lost is the experience, biker’s camaraderie/companionship of what the original gathering was. In the beginning, it was not about buying a commemorative black T-Shirt proving you were there! Not even close. It was about the people who were actually motorcycle enthusiasts.

Posers had not even invented yet. A vast majority of girls would not get on the back of a bike because it would mess up their hair (a positive improvement now). Who gave a good god damned if you could go to a hawker and put shinny chrome covers over your front forks! You did all of the work yourself with your friends. No phony covers. Lost – Lost are the day. These events are capitalized, made into something else.
Now these events are just aimed at people who ride & only to exploit their cash. Look at the zealousness of law enforcement. In Sturgis they had an aluminum step van with a permanently affixed counter and sliding window, called to pay your fine right on the spot? That was Sturgis, & is Daytona any better? Everyone must make his or her own decision. In 1975, it was a party, in 1990 it became commercialized, but you could get a room for $35/night. Now look to rent the same room in the same place!

I don't feel ripped off at all. stayed w/friends. most money spent all weekend (3days) was gas then beer total less than $200. oh, forgot the shooting range expenses.

I guess we have different defintions of "commercialized". I like to think more along the lines of reactionary forces to the masses; like growth, progress, heck even captial explotation$$$.

what I meant by research and educate is that those things u complained about can be avoided for themost part. butI realize that comes w/experience and time. even took me a while to be a bw/biketoberfest veteran.

maybe we will see u in oct. its the same thing just less people and usually warmer (which means more t/a skin) [sm=smiley20.gif]

Well, unfortunatley I'll probably start my spin-up training for another deployment about that time, but who knows what 09 might ring. Less people and more T/A is exactly what I'm looking for.

My first time at Daytona too. The local clubs we're average but had two cover $ charges, one for the front door and one for the dance room. Main street was great but could not travel out on the street with your drink, 4$ beer or $8 Jack. At A1A and Main St. my fellow riders got fussed at for taken pictures of the bar maids. Campground site $97 a day plus $10 per person staying. Just an observaton, no wyning. It was Ok but I'll stick with Sturgis and Mrytle Beach.

My 2 cents...
[ul][*]Yes, it's now overpriced, but if you know where to go, know how to have fun, then it's worth every dime.[*]Staying out of down is a good idea, unlessyou like to drink and be stupid, then the overpriced hotels start looking pretty good.[*]I always see something that amazes me.[*]A wedding band has about as much stopping power as a BB gun.
