Heading to the Smokies in late april and due to all my travel at work, I have anough rewards points to stay 4 nights at Holiday inn in Murphy NC. Is this going to be close enough to do day trips to the most popular rides around the dragon and such?
I know there are closer Holiday Inn's but the one in Murphy takes less points....
It's actually not bad..you can go all directions from there...30 minutes from the dragon...1.5 hours from Waynesvill/Asheville 2 hours from MT Mitchell...Close to Cherahala Pkwy, Telico plains, Foothills parkway, Hwy 28, wayah rd...Field of the woods, Hwy 68 is nice too...Look at the Atlas and pick the grey roads...less traveled, All in all i think it's a pretty good spot.

Cool, that is what I was hoping to hear. We are really looking forward to this trip.
You will find Murphy to be very Small town...Cuz it is...I myself like to stay in small towns, Food and hospitality is always nice...I am not sure if you have been to the NC appalachians before but they are nice...Forgot to mention the Blue ridge parkway...Traffic sucks sometimes but it's still nice. You need to ride it on a sunny day...Restaurant at Mount Pisgah is really nice, food is awesome.Get on at Cherookee and ride it to Ashevill one day...then go south on I40 to to old fort then take 70east then take 80 up to mount mitchell then keep going 80 to 19 west then take 197 south to Jupiter then go up to Hot sPRINGS THEN DOWN 209 south to Maggie valley then back to Murphy..that's a day ride ther..leave early and you cn do this ride>>>nice roads...then another day do the foothills, cherohala pkwy, dragon...Make sure you go on the dragon on a weekday...then take a day to do 28, to or from Franklin, wayah rd (between Franklin and Topton) ..there is a nice little restaurant 1/2 way...looks like a dive on the lake....Use mapquest and zoom in... i think it's State rd 1310...28 all the way to Fontana dam is really nice....How long are you staying there....?
Never mind i see you will be there 4 nights...you should be able to see all this....plan your ride, ride your plan...the BRP is nice and you will want to stopp all the time...pass by some stops to save time....

I live in N. GA and ride these roads all the time. Murphy is the perfect location for some outstanding 1 day (back to base) trips. Be sure to take one day and go to Suches, GA while you're there. From Murphy take 64 West to Hwy 60 South into GA. This is a beautiful curvy road (one of my favorites of this entire area) that will take you to Suches, GA and the TWO (Two Wheels Only) campground. Here's the link: www.twowheelsonly.com Very nice place to hang out for a little while. From there stay on 60 S into Dahlonega. From Dahlonega, Take 115 towards Cleveland, Ga and on up to Helen. (Nice little town, look it up). From Helen stay on 17/75 on up to 69 (Hayesville, NC and back to Murphy on 64 E. Y'all won't regret this 1 dayer!
Like it was said Murphy is a good choice. Not sure of your dates there but on April 23-25 there is a rally in Cherokee. The Cherokee Survivors Rally also there is Thunder in The Smokies that weekend in Maggie Valley. Two great rallies and only about 19 miles apart if that. Just food for thought.
Be sure to bring your DOT helmets with you. Especially when you ride the Dragon.

That is a great ride I ride Hwy 80 a lot love it. Also there is the Little Switzerland Loop that is on 226A Great rode little traffic and plenty of twisties.
Murphy was, if I remember correctly, the first little town I stayed in on my first visit to the Smokies. Of course that was almost 40 years ago so you can imagine that it wasn't a Holiday Inn. It's a good location for some fantastic riding. Have fun and be safe.
