One thing is for sure, mountain riding can be unpredictable....curves can sneak up on you and be a bit too sharp for your speed....also you can never tell what is around the curve....I have now learned after several close calls that it's sometimes better to slow down and smell the mountain air...

Don't forget to ride the BRP and most of the roads leading p up to it. For instance...highway 276 near Brevard go in both directions. Then there is highway 80 just nroth of Mt. Mitchell, head towards Marion. The first thing you will see is a billboard warning semi's and RVs to avoid this road. The first 5 miles are good, after that it flattens oout and straigfhtens up.

Don't try to tame the dragon on your first run...it will toss, bite and fry you. Know and practice leaning and rear braking before you go.

+1, and don't pose for all the cameras while you are riding. There are people who have websites and they sell those photos, and you can buy yours. But...don't mug for them, you might just end up in the other lanes or worse yet in the ditch...those ditches are 100 feet deep!

Depending of the time of the week and time of year Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge can be busy but that is a price you pay to be near everything. We love the area riding so much we bought us a cabin up there. If you are looking for the best riding all you have to do is crank the bike and move in any way. If you are going to be in the area for a few days I would say get a cabin about the same price overall and a hell of a lot better than a hotel room. Here is a link to our cabin it runs $110 a night. http://www.vrbo.com/294231

Add: when you do Cherohala and come out at Tellico Plains, Eat at "Nut n Fancy, then go to Hwy 68. Turn left and follow 68 through to Hwy 64. Beautiful ride with a few twisties, then left on 64 and then on to Nantahala. From there you can either take 129 to Deals Gap or continue on to Cherokee or even on to Maggie Valley. All roads in that area lead to fantistic rides. If you want me to map out some things for you let me know. I will get the map out and be more specific. My husband and I only live about 100 miles from the Smokey Mtns and we are up there at least 1 or 2 times a week in spring, summer and fall. It never gets boring! You need to ride down the main strip in Gatlinburg, so everyone can check out your bike!!!!

FYI, Tail of the Dragon is closed until probably late July or August due to the rock slides. That's the news I got from a LEO friend who patrols that area.

"TDOT hopes to approve a contract soon to repair the rock slide on "The Dragon," but fixing it could takes months."
