Any place is close to te beach. We stayed at the Holiday Inn the first year. Last year and this year at the La Quinta overlooking the Gulf. There's stuff going on at the North and South ends of the island all weekend.
When you head down, be cautious of the speeds on Hwy 100. The locals (police) use that road as their money resource.
VIP -
Three dinners prepared by chefs from the area. Last year was authenic Mexican, seafood, and Tex-Mex. Dinner starts at 6pm and so does the open bar!
The VIP room opens at 8 or 9am and you can sit in there all day drinking beer, water and sodas if you like.
The concerts are free with VIP and special (best) seating
Each VIP gets some freebies like hats, t-shirts, jackets, or the like.
You ride at the front of each event (light parade and Mexico run) instead of sucking fumes and dust at the back. Mexico run is free.
A free ticket for the bike drawing.
Special parking (up close) for events.
I think the meals, open bar, concerts and Mexico run are well worth the cost of VIP. I'll keep doing it every year.
I've never bought anything extra. The local police excort everyone to the border and then the Mexico police take over from there. With the wristband for the ride, you just keep rolling thru the booths at the border. When you leave, you pull around the stage set up at the head of the road and you can see the border crossing from there. Once back in the states, you're on your own as to getting back - they give you a map and directions to get back to South Padre.
Only a month away!
Tx - Thanks for the updates. So I assume from your note about the stage that maybe they do some sort of a stage show at the end of the ride or do you just cross the border and park for awhile?
Thanks again.
They have all kind of shows, parades, and the complete mainstreet is set up for the bikes. Lots of shopping, eating, drinking, whatever to do.
BTW: take some wrapped candy to throw to the kids. The streets are lined up with onlookers about a mile out.......
