Default Mountain Gate Poker Run - Talihina, OK

I don’t know if I’m actually going on the poker run, but I made my reservation for the weekend tonight….. weather is looking pretty decent. I love the Talimena Drive in the fall and I’m looking forward to seeing some green to start out the season.

Weather forecast has been up and down – rain/no rain….. cooler temps in the 60s not 70s, but right at this moment I’m thinking I’m still going to go. I can layer up. 60s should still be pretty enjoyable.

Poker run is $25. I’ve never been on one, but I might do it. Could be fun. The route looks like a nice ride – 120 mile tour through the countryside.

Yeah, I dig the Thunder Run – or at least the Roadhouse events…

I made my trip down to Talihina. My first riding in the rain and I know now how much I don’t care for it. It rained on the way down and it rained the day of the poker run. I luckily had a couple of decent days mixed in.

I didn’t think my new bike would ever be clean again after riding through rain and wet roads all the way down there.

I can’t believe this, but I think my PIAA bulb was too hot for the stock glass and the cold rain made it break!? Only think I can figure.

The little Talimena motel isn’t much, but it’s a nice clean place and I welcomed the heater by the time I got there….they have little fridges and a microwave in the rooms.

Friday I got around about 10am or so and hosed the bike down for a ride up on the Talimena Scenic Byway. I love that road! Has to be the best road in Oklahoma for riding. In my opinion anyway. Lots of opportunity to pull over and take pictures of the scenery.

I trekked the drive over to the Arkansas side and had a nice buffet lunch at the Queen Wilhelmena resort. A good place to stop and relax before completing the drive and coming back.

I went through the valley on the north side so I could stop by this little dive bar that sits exactly on the state line:

I met a cute little stoner pyromaniac in there. She didn’t know it was the first day of spring and decided that she needed to burn something when she got home. LOL Trippy!

Got back to Talihina in plenty of time to clean the bike up really good for the bike show that I knew would ensue…..

The motel filled up before the night was over… there were a lot of metrics. I was surprised there were so many metrics. This white Suzuki R109 or whatever was really sharp!

I met some really nice guys and we all went on the poker run together – this was the pancake breakfast before:

Us up on the mountain:

It rained on us the whole day and the roads were slick….our lead went over a wooden bridge and almost went down. Scared me to watch it. We got separated from a couple of guys who were with us and when we left a stop we saw them down at that same bridge and sure enough the pretty white Suzuki went down:

That guy was really lucky. No helmet and he landed in the jagged rocks on the side of the road. Those Corbin hard bags and fairing held up amazingly well too. I can’t believe they didn’t break!

We went about five miles down the road (if that) and found another poker run participant in the ditch and they weren’t so lucky. A guy on a Wide Glide with 16” apes went off the road and his old lady was hurt so bad they had to mediflight her out.

The Talihina folks really did make an effort to make it a fun run. They served us free fresh burgers and hot dogs. Had two free kegs of beer and a bon fire and had a dj. If the weather had cooperated a bit more it would have been a really good time. One of our group won the pot! He got $750! Not too bad.

Thanks for the report, Fastfwd. I think we will do that same route in a month or so.
