The Deltran Tenders have an automatic function, they will not overcharge your battery. There are a couple of others out there that serve the same function, or claim to, but why not go with one that is proven?
I, like Diesel Dave have the Battery Tender Plus, it charges at 1.25 amp to 15.6 volts then drops to a 14.4 volt float charge. I have a 310 amp battery, it takes about 10 minutes to charge the battery the day after a ride. I do not connect the charger while the battery is hot. Old fashioned, I guess. The float charge will not boil the water off of the battery. My stock battery lasted 7 years. The cord is visible in this picture but not the charger.

I keep the "pigtail" attached all the time so whenever I know I'm going to be parked form more than a day, or when it's time to store for the winter, I just plug it in.
I will charge a dead battery but takes a while. I got mine locally for less, I think it was around $16, been using it for 5 years now.
Deltran Tender Jr. has worked for many years and is very affordable. Gets the most out of those batteries. Also use it all year round. As soon as the bike is cool enough plug her up.
I have an older version of this. It is little more expensive than others, but it desulfates, and compensates for temperature. Also comes with a free digital voltmeter, so you can check how well it charged.
