Default 08 Nightster - what to look out for?

Hey guys,

My g/f and I went to the local dealer today and she ended up bringnig home an 08 nightster 1200 in Vivid orange and black with 2,3xx miles on it. This bike is her first Harley, and she's beyond ecstatic. There's a few modifications to it, such as derby covers, and other odds and ends upgraded, Willie G style. She's thrilled and can't wait for nicer weather. She is upgrading from an older Yamaha XJ650, so needless to say this is a huge upgrade and I'm very excited for her.

I wanted to know if there is anything warranty or recall related that we need to be aware of? Also had some questions...

The side plate mount on there, not sure if it's stock, looks it though. How do you all mount your plates, it seems to fold in or out, or stick out to the side real far, found that a bit odd.

Also, over in the touring section (I have a streetglide and frequent there) there's a DIY free mod sticky, do you guys have one here or can anyone give some advice on what we should do as far as free upgardes/tips/tricks?

Since she is upgrading from a older Yammy 650, tighten the throttle friction screw some until she gets used to the new power. Would hate for her to take off too quick and panic.
A little throttle friction can be a good thing while she's adapting .

upgrades could include (after she is used to the bike):
1. pipes
2. air sucker
3. fuel management
4. shocks
5. whatever she wants on the bike !

I'm on my second Nightster. Fantastic bikes. I fully serviced both of mine but mine were purchased privately as Harley I'm sure serviced prior to sale. I then take a day out and parts off and give it a good detail. To me that is great way to get acquainted. It's then too where the ideas for swapping, chopping, hiding and relocating come into play. Mine was apart 30min after I got it home...

Thanks all, I was more concerned if there were any recalls and or freebies we should be aware of. I guess we'll take it day to day and mod it accordingly. She can definitely handle the bike, no doubt about it. And we're already looking at some V&H slip ons, we're ordering today so looking forward to it.

Congrats o the new ride and I'd have to believe the dealer would've run any recalls on the bike before putting out on sales floor. You can have them run the VIN to double-ckeck, but guessing she's good to go.

For the plate mount...the stockers swing out horizontal (big flag) so it's probably oem. Can buy or fab vertical side-mount. As far as "freebies"...nothing's free on a HD...

Thanks Iceman, found that stock setup a bit weird it stuck out really far.

Any recommendations for crash bars/engine guards? She wants some highway pegs, plus some added security would be nice to protect the engine/frame/body in the event of an "oops".

Biggest issue is water intrusion into the fuse box.
Remove covers and look, typically not an issue.

Crash guard...OEM Harley is fine.

Recalls, as I recall, fuel pump and battery side cover retainer clips.

Search is your friend on this site...lots of data.

Thanks Kenny, yes I am familiar with the search feature, I have been a member for sometime now.

As for the fuse box, thanks for the heads up. I'll take a look at that and make sure we're good. I'll call the dealer and make sure the recall items were addressed accordingly before the bike was sold to us.
