Which ever way you decide to go, DO NOT LUG THE MOTOR. Sportsters do not take kindly to lugging, neither do their primary chains.

+1000000 to this. Honestly, not sure where all this pamper the engine for the first 500 to 1000 miles comes from on motorcycles.......You don't hear that from any of the car sales guys when you buy a new car or truck! If any of you guys are gearheads, you've probably seen freshly built motors thrown on dyno machines and pushed hard after a few warmup runs! I was told both times, (when I bought my bike new & after I had bored the engine), been told to ride it like I normally would after it has been warmed up properly! Just change the oil & filter anywhere bewteen the first 100 to 500 miles, and you'll be good to go.

Days of engine break ins are over. Todays technology has eliminated the need for these rituals. Lots of the procedures such as warm ups and quick oil changes are obsolete.

It's more about the love of the new "thing". As kids when we were given a new toy we would keep it in the box neat and clean and would not let anybody touch it. But soon enough it would be broken to pieces. Or the new gril friend who was such a "honey" the few first dates.
Unless you do anything extreme, the bike is going to be fine. And anything extreme you shouldnt be doing anyways, break in or no.
