I have searched and found a few threads on this but answers tend to vary and none have reported the same indication I am seeing. My sportster came with a single all metal key so I assume it doesn't have a security system or anything like that. It starts, runs, and operates normally. I have only had it a little while and it's sat in the garage for the last month and a half so I am not entirely sure what is normal on the lights. I have the downloaded owners manual and purchased a service manual but I don't find anything in either about this light.
All that said I don't remember seeing this light until today so I think it is new. When I turn the key on the red light that is shaped like a key on the speedo lights up for a few seconds and goes out. When I hit the starter button the bike starts and the light illuminates again and again goes out. It remains out while the engine is running. All the turn signals and other lights operate normally. Is this just normal or is it signalling some sort of problem?
This is normal operating mode of the light on the spedo. There is only a problem if the light stays on.
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping that was the case but I didn't recall seeing it till this afternoon when I was starting up to come home from a ride.
When new your bike had two keys and also came with an owners manual. You may be able to download a copy from the H-D website, go to the 'Owners' tab. Knowledge is power! If you bought from a dealer I would ask them for a duplicate key - somebody has yours.........
