I sanded my new to me bars and painted them with a crystal clear enamle from Rustoleum. I am having issues with it not quite bonding to the metal right. The paint just flakes off with the slightest of abrasion. Any thoughts on what may be happening? It was a little cool when I painted, will that cause the results I have? Any suggestions on a good durable clear paint to use is appreciated. Thinking of checking into the cost of powder coating instead but the only shop here is closed on the weekends.
Hey man. A regular clear isn't going to work well since it's meant to bond to paint, not bare metal. There are some clears on the market specific to your application, but I haven't used any so I can't say if one's better than the other. I know that's not much help, but at least it'll get you in the right direction. Good luck!
If you want clear on bare metal, try poly coat or acrylic instead of enamel. Also, degrease really well before and after painting. Paint between 65 and 90 degrees F.
I have used their clear, did not like them. I was actually shooting basecoat though.
I don't know exactly what your surface looks like, but typically clears to not stick to smooth surfaces. 2K clear coat will bond with bare metal but it needs to be rough or scuffed.
Powdercoating or a special coating is your only option. Plain clearcoat won't adhere very well to raw steel and it'd still rust albeit slightly slower. IMO, just paint them black and forget about it.
