I've got a xl1200v "seventy two" and it's my first motorcycle and first HD! Couldn't be any happier with my choice. So, I'm looking to make her a little louder but I'm stuck between slips ons and the full package of pipes, air cleaner and download. My question is, is it mandatory to do the download or tune with just slip ons? The only thing I'm on the fence about is the cost... I'm only considering the slip ons because it seems to be a cheape route.
Welcome the the HDForums. No need to do anything further with just slip ons. You're good to go. When you change out the air and slips, you're likely increasing the airflow, so it's recommended to retune.
Awesome. Thanks for the info. Of course the dealership says you have to buy the air cleaner and the download with the slip ons but I wasn't to sure if that was entirely true. Looks like I'll be buying slip ons today then!
Check out Cycle Shack slip-ons, they are reasonably priced and have good reviews on here.
Avoid the new style Screamin Eagle Street Performance slip-ons, they are overpriced and hardly any louder than stock.

You don't have to have Fuel Management if you are just doing the pipes. If you was to change the Air Cleaner and pipes then you would need some type of Fuel Management. However, many people do get some type of Fuel Management as harley's come from the factory lean.
Congrats on your bike! Can't wait to hear about your modifications
Rush slip-ons with 2" here as well. And as OddJack said, they are loud. I did a sound check of a whole bunch of slip-ons and full exhaust systems at the local HD dealership parking lot .... nothing major, just hung around in the parking lot, listened to exhaust notes and talked to the riders about the brand, baffle size etc if that wasn't too visible.
just buy what you like that is quality, personally I like cobra's & pythons, expect to pay about $300 for a quality set of slip-ons, bike will run fine.. you'll love the sound, no need to do the full exhaust, it's just a lot more money for too much noise
