Got hit by a car riding behind my boyfriend of the day back in 1986. I was not wearing a helmet and the ambulance driver said it was a good thing because I would have broken my neck and not survived. I ended up with my jaw broken in 3 places and lost the left side of my face and almost lost my left eye. I have a few scars but I also now have my MC endorsment and no longer ride behind. It was on an 86 Sporty and my friend I wrecked with is the one who sold me my 89 1200 Sporty.

Andthe qualifications of the ambulance driver that would enable him/herto makethis determination were what?

He was the village idiot. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. "You lost half your face, good thing you weren't wearing a helmet." WTF?!
Yesterday, I was riding to work at 6.45 am. About a mile from where I work is a little store that sits right off the four lane. I was doing about 55 to 60 mph when I saw a car sitting at the entrance waiting to pull out. I slowed down to 50 mph and was watching the car, just when I thought they seen me and everything was cool, they pull out SLOW in front of me. All I could do is hit the back breaks, I slid the rear tire 43 yards and then the rear started to come around so I let off the break and almost lost it again from the bike jerking back around. When I pulled up beside her at 5 mph, she rolled down the window and said " Sorry ". I gave her a thumbs up and went on. Thats the closest I have come to a wreck on pavement. I was beyond mad. Had to go buy a new tire because of the flat spot from locking down the rear.
Don't let off the back brake once it starts to skid or look at a possible high side.
Back in 1975 a buddy and I were racing on some back country road, we hit some curves way fast and both went down. I slid not 2 inches past the front bumper of some little old lady's land yacht, lots of road rash but nothing else. My best friend wasn't as lucky. It is amazing how stupid we are in our youth, that any of us survive is a miracle.
I've wrecked but luckly never on pavement. 2 years ago I was trail riding with my dad on our dual sport bikes and I decided that I was going to go *****-out up this old oil lease road that goes through an open field...I was up to about 55mph and ran into a three set of truck ruts...first set of ruts through me off balance and into the second set, those then through me out of control into the third set which I bit the ground with the right side of my full face helmet and my right shoulder slamming into the ground. I see the bike go end-over-end through the field in a cloud of dust. Blew the visor off my helmet, cracked the mounts and paint, made my handle bars into a pretzel and bent my brake lever up under the case...
I walked away with a headache and a busted bike but it could have been a lot worse. I just hope that I never have to experience a wreck like that on pavement.
