So, I bought a 2007 roadster sportster, with about 17.5k miles on it. I have been riding it about a month. When I start it up, and the engine is cold, the engine cycles, and sounds like its going to die (my last experience with a motorcycle was in the 80s, with a carbeurated engine). If it were carbed, it sounds like its not choked correctly. When its warm, there isnt an issue. This morning, it actually died, and I had to restart it.
On the bike, it has aftermarket pipes, they are Rineharts (no idea of the model). To the best of my knowledge, everything else is stock. The oil was changed prior to me buying it (I helped change it), my suspicion is either the spark plugs need to be changed, and/or the air filter does as well.
Any other suggestions regarding this? I'm new to all this, so, I'm kind of just taking stabs in the dark.
I have not. I am suspecting it may be a tuning issue too. Your suggestion is certainly something to look into though. I have not run a diagnostic test on it. I can talk to my local indie mechanic, have them run it, see if that pulls anything. Thanks for the suggestion.
You can run your own diagnostics. Buy yourself a Factory Service Manual.
Might check your Idle Air Controller, that has a lot to do with cold start idle. My gf had a Honda that cold idled up and down. Took the IAC apart, cleaned it, and solved the problem.
