Very cool bro! I'm going to take the packing out of mine. The packing is wrapped in wire that kinda jingles when running.

My packing was just wrapped in tape. Kinda looked like masking tape but I am sure it was higher temp tape than that. Thanks for the tip if I decide to put it back in (wire huh).

I'm going to take out the fiberglass. and leave the baffles in. It doesn't pop as much with the baffles in.

Default RE: Baffles?

ive been messing with baffles lately. Heres what i found out with my bike:

i got an 883 to 1200 conversion with vance and hines straight shots.

Ive been riding the bike without baffles the last year, i bought it off someone who took out the baffles and threw them away.

1. Without baffles your pipes are louder, but to me not a good loud, a raspy loud.

2. You backfire alot when de-celerating.

3. My bike ran alot leaner and had alot more carb coughs with the baffles out.

4. I lost alot of overall power with the baffles out.

I bought some baffles and put them in my bike yesterday. Took a 4hr ride with my buddy. Overall my bike ran alot smoother with the baffles, had a deeper sound, and the pinging went away i use to get after a few hours of in traffice ridin (due to the bike running lean).

Only thing i would suggest is this:

If you take you baffles out, adjust the carb cause its gonna run lean. If your having problems with your bike running lean, i wouldnt even think about taking the baffles out unless your ready to do some carb work.

i bought some Cycle shack slip ons and i took the baffles out and had the same experience with the loud popping while decelerating. so then my dad suggested that i modify the baffles by folding up the lipwhich opens up the baffles and lets more air out. it sounds great and really loud, you shoulda saw the neighbors faces when i started it while they were outside.. damn near priceless...

I have stock pipes and the previous owner removed the baffles. The bike sounds great with a deep throaty sound, but backfires and doesn't run as good as it should. It's still under warranty, so I'm going to have them rejet the carb and add an air kit and hope that helps.

I am tempted to remove them again to ride to work tommorrow(only 1 bolt) cause the younger fellas at work like to see pops ride up on his Harley. Give em' a real roar in the morning but am a little concerned about the neighbors at 6:45 in the morn.
Heh. I got the V&H straight shot slip ons a while back and started out with the "stock baffles" (which is really just an open metal tube with notches in it to deflect the sound a little). I thought they were a wee bit too loud for me, plus I occasionally like to go riding at night when the temperature rises here in Texas. So I got the "quiet baffles" and put those in so that I wouldn't disturb the neighbors as much. It still sounds loud to me, but not "too loud". I was joking with a friend of mine that I should let him just ride my motorcycle past me down the street so I can get the 3rd person perspective on what they really sound like. Ultimately, though, I don't think I'd enjoy a day long road trip with the stock baffles in since I'd either have to wear earplugs or listen to my ears ring after I got off at the end of the run.
