are you talking about these bolts? They are not real bolts. They just cover.
Those are the ones. I hadn't pulled the covers off yet, I just noticed the rust showing under them and wandered if I could pull those parts to clean them.
I anticipated the entire bolt being rusted since it was showing from under the covers.
It is a 1996 sportster. In great condition the bolts are just rusted. It starts and drives great too. Just a cosmetic issue.
I would pull them, replace them, and use electrical grease liberally inside some chrome bolt covers. Then wipe up excess with rag. This will prevent the head bolts from rusting underneath the chrome cover, like is typically the case, as shown in this thread. Good luck!
Somebody lives near the coast , that's salt air rust & corrosion. I'd be on cleaning that bike better or head bolts rusting are going to be the least of your worries , I'm betting you've got paint and aluminium corrosion going on all over that bike.

Actually, I don't live near the coast and the bike never has either. The rest of the bike looks fine. No corrosion or rust anywhere else. Just on the bolts
Guy I see the beginnings of the black coming off the heads from the base metal starting to corrode in the pictures, nothing to me but I've been around & worked on enough of them in that condition to offer a heads up before it really gets a hold. Good luck with the cleaning and as others have said don't pull the bolts to clean them unless your planning on replacing gaskets too , once you break torque they are done.

I appreciate the heads up. I normally keep my toys cleaned regularly, the guy I got it from didn't. I went over it just today and gave it a good scrubbing. First nice weather I have had and been off work.
