I was told when I bought mine that it needed premium. The owners manual says 87 octane for 883's and 91 for 1200's.

Manual says 91 octane for mine.

I screwed up Saturday evening. [sm=bangbang.gif]Ipushed the middle button at the pump. Each gas station is a little different as far as octanes. About 10 miles later I could hear alittle difference in the engine noise. I turned around and went back to the station to check what the octane was. It was 89. Stupid me.
I went home and drained as much as I could (about 4 gallons) and then went & filled up with 93. Not very smart during break-in period.

What everyone else uses is irrelivant. Use what your owners manual says to use. Next question would then be "what brand" of fuel do you use in yer Sporty"?

Premium only... the way I see it, for filling my peanut, it is the difference of a Sunday paper per tank. Worth it??? I believe so. Not worth it??? Not willing to try.

Also, the refining difference different between the two(premium vs. regular) is HUGE! For a couple of pennies more, would rather not listen to the knocks and noise. Sporty's do not like to run on liquid ****.

Ive experimented with alot of defferent octane ratings.I work at an airport and have access to 100 octane leaded gasoline thats ethenol free. The lead in the gas acts as a lubricant for the valves.Ethenol (am I spelling that right?)will eventully destroy all plastic and rubber componets in the fuel system.Well to get to the point my bike runs best on 93 to 94 octane rating.

What's the gas price in Ontario today? $1.30/L in the lower mainland B.C.
By the way, I use 91 octane gas.

I tried higher octane fuel a few times. There was no improved performance or fuel mileage. So, I went back to the manual recommended 87 for my 883.

Now I have found some fuel brands that make a considerable difference in both performance. The first one being Citgo (which I will no longer purchase). The second one being Shell, which I had Rarely purchased before. I'm not sure all Shell fuel is the same, but there is one station close to me that I get 10% - 15% better mileage from. And this has been a consistant pattern now for about 750 miles.
