Default Switchgear retrofit?

The '00 Sportster I'm picking up this weekend is has almost all of the lettering rubbed off of the switches. Apparently, the caps aren't replaceable, so would it be possible to retrofit newer switches in their place fairly easily? Or am I better off just replacing the stock switches? I don't want to buy chrome caps.

Do you have to read them?
If you know their function, you could just black them on out.

As an ancient draftsman, though, I do know there are rub transfer letters available at drafting supply or art shops. Even the small text sizes.

There are caps and even complete control housings with switches. You can see a variety here:

I like this idea. I think the switches are flat, so dry transfers would work well. When I swap handlebars, I can open the switch housings up hit the switch caps with a few coats of matte clear to protect the letters. Great idea, thank you! And thanks to Imold for the link.

It's been 20+yes since I drafted by hand, so I had problem remembering the brand. Chartpak is what we mostly used.
Not only lettering, but thousands of electronic and design symbols are available, so you could go rogue and replace all letters w/ symbols and arrows too.

One supplier: http://www.pcbsupplies.com/dry-transfer/

Can't refer anyone specific as the shop I used is no longer in business.

I used to work at a hobby shop in college, I'm going to check these out and see if they're the right size:

HI and LO for the lights, LT and RT for the turn signals, OFF and RUN for the kill switch, and GO for ignition. What do you think? Barring that, I'll order some dry transfers from the site you mentioned. With the auxiliary lights I'm removing from the bike, and with going from buckhorn bars to trackers, I'll probably have plenty of wiring to clean up anyway.
