I've done the stage 1 upgrade & a 2 into 1 exhaust so i'm thinking of going to 1200cc, is there any downside to it? do you lose throttle response & get a ''lazy'' feel?

I run stage one with simply drag pipes and I can say when I got the 1200 upgrade done I did lose some response but if definitely wasn't lazy. But this was with efi and I'm not sure if that is what you're talking g about or not since you didn't put a year or model. Regardless, it only felt that way because the shop tuned it like a piece of crap. Once I tuned it just right it runs better than it ever has.
there is no down side. i lost no response. my bike went from fun to F***! after tuning past the stage 1 download, the bike went to holy F***!
you will just re-tune if EFI and need to decide on keeping your 883 front sprocket or switching to 1200 front sprocket.
883 sprocket gives you mean acceleration , less smooth at higher speeds (i keep the 883 sprocket)
1200 gives you smoother acceleration and better highway performance with lower rpms
i'm not into digging in engines but, this would be a good time to consider cams since your rods will be out. not needed but, just throwing it out there. there are plenty of folks here that can help you.
i give it about an hour before people start telling you to get a hammer or NHRS kit because HD is evil.
When considering a 1200 kit, be aware that there are several options. A very popular one is a 1250cc kit, which comes with new cylinders and pistons, plus gaskets, which with increased CR gives a serious boost in performance. Simply use Search for '1250' and you will plenty to read in here on those kits. There are a couple of excellent threads showing what is involved, which are well worth reading. One by Mich comes to mind. If you use a 1200 kit the work will be similar.
Take care which one you choose! They make a kit which converts your 883 bike to a bone stock 1200, which includes cylinder heads, etc, which is pretty expensive. There is also a SE performance kit which gives increased performance and is better value for money. You can get great performance at lower cost by using a 1250 conversion kit, as previously mentioned.
