Default Clutch Slipping After Primary Oil Change

Hi Folks,

First time posting. I just purchased a 2013 Iron 883. It had 200 miles on it and was told I should change the engine and primary oil on it asap. I put about another 200 miles on it and decided to change the fluids .

I placed Mobil 1 75w90 gear oil as many people online had recommended in the primary. However, once I fired up the bike and tried to get in into gear it made a screeching sound and once it was in gear it would not respond to throttle.

I messaged the guy on youtube that posts for Delboys garage, and he told me that the oil I used is way off, and that it is way too thick and to drain it immediately. and said it'd be okay to place Castrol 06116 Power1 V-Twin 20W-50 Synthetic 4T Motorcycle Oil . However, I still have slipping and I'm still unable to get it into gear.

Any suggestions?

thanks again!

75W90 gear oil is 50 weight. Engine oil and gear oil viscosity are measured differently. I am using Red Line 75W90 GL5 gear oil with out issues. I have smoother shifting and more positive clutch hook up. You have other problems.

Using 75w90 Valvoline synthetic coming from Harley brand and it is smoother. Did you just put it in the inspection hole or did you take over the cover? Did you adjust the clutch at all?

Many of us use Mobil 1 75W-90 gear oil with no issues whatsoever. It's just fine.

Perhaps you should do a proper clutch adjustment to eliminate that possible issue. Its likely some areas of the clutch plates are dried out and probably stuck together. You might just have to force it into gear and put some more miles on, going through all gears with vigor. Get it all up to full operating temps so everything gets worked in and those clutch plates get some oil into them.

I'd suggest to adjust the clutch. Did you take the derby cover off?? If so, did that little nut in the middle of the cover come off??

I did adjust the clutch. I loosened the cable adjuster, I adjusted the adjustment screw inside the derby cover and I left 3mm of slack in the lever.

I did not take the bike out very far. I just took it down my driveway and u-turned when it wasn't engaging. You think it just needs to be warmed up due to dry spots?

do the sporties hold 32 oz? I thought my fatboy held 32 oz like most v twin primaries an it didn't feel right an I found out it holds 28 oz.

It's not the oil. Do some You tube videos on adjusting the Sporty clutch. It's a little different then a big twin but pretty foolproof and simple when done correctly. Also consider the fact that Harley's product are pretty good and total matched to the product. Not all that expensive in the small quantities and actually cheaper then some of the buzz word named products. Accepting the fact that many people online had recommended truly means little in the long run. Especially the primary oil.

Ok...be honest now. If all you did was change the primary lubricant, and it worked fine before, then your clutch does not like your lube. My clutch hated HD Syn3, enough that I swapped out the clutch and used HD Formula+. It's now very happy!! Don't put synthetic in the primary!
