For those who change your own oil what do you run?How much do I put in an 05 1200??Any advice, tips, etc?I read the "coke bottle filter drain " thread. anyone use anything other than HD oil?
I just did my oil/tranny fluid change last week, and I used Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50 Full Synthetic and a K&N Filter. I put about 32 OZ in the tranny and added enough oil in the tank to go about 1/3 of the way up the dipstick. Then I ran the bike for a while, and checkthe level and for any leaks. Everythings good.
Amsoil 20w50, little less than 3 litres. Please do not overfill, Sportster has common oil blow-by problem. If the dipstick is reading half at operating temp, that's good to go.
I also recommend Amsoil 20w50, it is good for tranny. Not every oil will do Sportster tranny, use the one without friction modifier, you are good to go. Or you can choose Harley primary/tranny oil.
We use Amsoil 20W-50 in the tranny and motor. I would probably try Redline if I could find it anywhere. It takes a little over three quartsto bring it to the middle of the dipstick. I never fill it to the top.
I prefer Redine synthetic, but I'll use Harley synthetic also, their 20-50.
I try to use Redline 20-60 synthetic in the summertime where I live, however, as it gets quite hot here. I also use 1/2 quart of Duralube in the oil in the summer here as well.
